Possible Processor upgrades for PW 650

Hi,

Are all the processors listed below possible upgrade choices for a PW 650 with a single 2.4 ghz 1mb cache machine?

Has anybody else gone up to 3.2 with 2mb cache (SL7AE, SL7BW)?  If so, were there any "gotchas"?

Anybody got a good source for the VRM and heatsink for the 2nd processor?

Thanks in advance.

Which motherboard version do you have?

Keep in mind that with 2 CPUs installed, they must be exact matches.  (same sspec)

Believe it or not, dell spare parts has the best price on the VRM - $25

Mine is the earlier 2K812, not the later F1262, but that shouldn't make any difference from what I've read.

I did buy the second VRM not thinking that Dell would have a better price and ended up paying around $75.

I do have matching SL7AE 3.2 processors.

I am still looking for the "factory" second processor heatsink (0U535) and additional fan (0U231)before putting it all together. I will try the Dell parts phone number to source those.

Check http://www.etiexpress.com/ for the second heatsink.  You should be able to get it delivered for under $20.

I'm suprised your system came with only one fan.  Have you checked to make sure its not there?

Actually to be honest it's all academic until I get home from my deployment. I'm overseas.

I will check when I get home but I thought the second fan was separate from other posts I've read and what I inferred from Dell's Precision Workstation parts guide.

If it does come with both case fans that will be great!

And thanks for the tip on the http://www.etiexpress.com/ site! they have the HS for $10.

All of this will come together as soon as I get home. I've been ordering the bits a little at a time from places like Ebay. I got the basic box from an off-lease vendor and it came with a single 2.4 Ghz proc and I wanted to make it go zoom. This will be my 5th Dell around the house.

I'm pretty sure both fans ship originally in the case.  The reason is that the hard drive cooling won't work right if air can enter the case through the second CPU exhaust port.

Well, good luck with the project.  Do me a favor though,  Please post your results to this thread when you do get it all together - I'd like to know if the 2mb cache will work!

Will do. I have every reason to expect that it will work. The 7505 chipset and the 3.2mhz 2mb cache chips are supposed to work together according to Intel...and they are the OEM for this mobo for Dell.

And you can find the same configuration listed in numerous entries on Ebay.

Got home from deployment and popped in the two SL7AE processors and after finding somebody who had two OEM heatsinks for those, fired it up and Voila! Shows 4 processors in the Device manager (3.2 Xeons).

So it works. Now to find something to really test it with. :smileytongue:
