Powering up Q...

I would like my computer to come on when I turn on the power strip, along with the rest of the system.  Currently, everything except the CPU comes on, at which time I have to press the power button on the 'puter.  Anyone know a trick to making that happen?  Thanks in advance!!

There are two wires on the motherboard that are soft on/off jumpers that will start the computer by jumping them with a piece of metal. So I guess you could rig something off of them, or the start button itself.

Although JOKERSWILD usually gives pretty good advice, this suggestion is dangerous if you don't know what you are doing.  Don't start messing around with rigging something off your motherboard. If you short something out, you're in real trouble.  Instead, tell us which model computer you have and perhaps we can suggest a setting in the BIOS that will accomplish what you are trying to do.  Each system is somewhat different.  On my office system, a 4550, I have the AC Power Recovery set inn some way (don't remember the settings since I'm not at the office) so that when I shut down in the evening, the computer shuts off.  I then shut the power strip off and when I come in in the morning, I just turn the power strip back on and the computer starts.  Note that if I try this immediately after shutting down it doesn't work, but does work if I leave it off for more than about 15 minutes.

This is what I did on my XPST 500 (Win 98se) and it works. Start/restart your comp and hold down the DEL key to get into the BIOS screen. Arrow over to the BOOT tab. Then down to the restore AC/...tab. Then set it to 'power on'. (not to last state). When you exit, make sure you save the settings. With it set up this way, when you turn on the power strip, your comp will start. No more banging on the start switch to start your comp. In my mind it's the only way to go if you have a balky start switch. I have had it set up this way on my system for over 3 years with no problems.

I've got a 4600i... I checked the BIOS settings and couldn't find anything related to powering up the computer.  Thanks to everyone for all the help!!!

Documentation on the BIOS settings for your system can be found at:

http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/systems/dim4600/en/4600i/sm/syssetup.htm#1138127

The settings you want to play with are under Power Management > AC Power Recovery.  Your choices are Off , On, and Last.  If you wait a minute while I reboot, I'll tell you how mine are set.  Again, this only works for me if I shut down, turn off the power strip, then wait for a while before turning the power strip back on.  I'll be back in a minute to tell you my settings.

I'm back.  On my 4550, the settinig for AC Power Recovery is "On".
