Program list missing from Install/Uninstall

My apologies if this is the wrong message board for this matter.

When I open Add/Remove Programs from the Control Panel, there are no programs listed under the Install/Uninstall tab.  I did use it a couple weeks ago to remove an older version of my ISP software.  I recently downloaded Critical Updates and Windows Updates from the Microsoft web site, but don't believe that should have affected Add/Remove Programs.  Anyway, not sure what happened.  Does anyone know how to get the programs to display again under the Install/Uninstall tab?  Many thanks.

WarpCore,

Go to Start|Run, type CMD and click OK. At the command prompt enter REGSVR32 APPWIZ.CPL and press . Post back if that does not restore the listing.

WarpCore1,

Sorry, I assumed Windows XP. Instead of CMD enter command.

Hi Denny,

Thanks for the quick repsonse.  Went to Start/Run and entered "CMD", but got a pop-up that said "Windows cannot find CMD."

I'm running Windows Me.

Out of curiousity goto Start > Run > type in '  regedit  '. When regedit opens, navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

If the Uninstall folder exists, click on the '+' sign and see if there is a listing in that folder (right pane). If it exists there should be several programs listed. If Uninstall is not listed at that location, that is probably the source of the problem.

Hi chuket,

I navigated to the Uninstall location you cited.  Uninstall was there, with many folders (programs) in it.  Assume these are the ones that should be displaying under the Install/Uninstall tab.

Hi Denny,

Did what you suggested.  Entered REGSVR32 APPWIZ.CPL and got the following response:  "Bad command or file name."  Wasn't sure if there was a space in the string, so also tried REGSVR32APPWIZ.CPL (without the space) and got the same response.

Open Winows Explorer and navigate to the C:\Windows\System folder. Look for COMCTL32.DLL. When you find it right-click> copy and paste it to a handy folder on your desktop (just in case you need to restore it). Also right-click on the file> properties> version and note the version number (mine is 5.81). Next put your Win CD in the drive. Using Start> Run> SFC, extract COMCTL.DLL to C:\Windows\System. Also in SFC> settings, select 'prompt for backup' or 'always backup.....'. Back up the file. Comctl32.dll is used to produce lists among other things. If it is corrupt, that might be the problem. Here is an Add\Remove program (freeware) that does more than the Windows installation. It also uses the Comctl32.dll file to operate:

If you need version 5.81, you can D\L it here;

Even if the file COMCTL32.DLL is in the system folder (as it should be), it could be corrupt. Follow the instructions using SFC to get a good copy from your CD or the D/L link I provided.

Hi chuket,

Didn't find the file using Explore - it wasn't displayed in the Systems folder.  Did a Search and found it.  Search results had it as being in the Systems folder.  Anyway, my version of COMCTL32.DLL is 5.81 as well.  Will have to try the other steps you suggested next week after returning from PA.

Thanks for taking the time with this.

Hy chuket,

Tried the SFC command, but my Windows Me OS doesn't recognize it.  Is there another syntax type for this function?  Assume you meant to extract the COMCTL32.DLL file (vice COMCTL.DLL).  I have a WMe Reinstallation CD.  Is that the one to use?

When I did a Search for "comctl" , the following files were found:

COMCTL32.DLL (Application Extension), MSCOMCTL.OCX (ActiveX Control), COMCTL32.OCA (OCA File) and comctl32.ocx (ActiveX Control).  I copied/pasted the COMCTL32.DLL file into a desktop folder I created.

May need to download the 5.81 version of COMCTL32.DLL from the web site you cited.  It's downloaded as a Zip file, so will need to uncompress it.  Don't have WinZip on my computer at the moment.

Thanks,

Dan

chuket,

A quick follow-up.  Found some information at Microsoft's web site http://support.microsoft.com.  There's a Knowledge Base Article - number 129605 that should help with the extract.  It's titled, How To: Extract Original Compressed Windows Files.    Need to use Start/Run, then enter msconfig, etc., etc. Will try that tomorrow.

Sorry about that, I was thinking Win98. For Win ME see these instructions:

http://service1.symantec.com/support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001011114021106

The file to extract is the COMCTL32.DLL file (this is the DLL that produces the 'list' in dialogue boxes). First save your current 'comctl32.dll'   file to a folder on your desktop or somewhere where you won't forget. My version of that file is 5.81, yours may be different. When you extract it also save a backup if prompted. Save the extacted file to C:\windows\System. Then reboot and try the Add\Remove program again. If it fails you can download Smart Uninstall from these sites. It may or may not work as it uses the COMCTL32.DLL file also:

As a footnote, to see your uninstall folder, use Start> Run> Regedit> OK. Then navigate to the

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - Software - Microsoft - Windows - CurrentVersion - Uninstall key.

You should see many listings there.

chuket,

I'll try the instructions at the site you provided.  I did try doing an extract using a Startup disk along with Start computer with CD-ROM support, and did an extract that way.  Looked like it worked, but programs still are not displaying in Add/Remove Programs.  I navigated to HKEY.........Uninstall and there were many items listed.

Will pop in again next week.  Thanks.
