RAID Configuration Questions

I'm planning to buy an XPS 435 in the next few days. I have 2 questions:

1. Does RAID 0 really provide a significant performance improvement? Should I buy a 1 TB drive vs. 2 500GB drives in a RAID 0 configuration? Or is the performance improvement very minor?

2. Since XPS 435 has 3 drive bays, can I buy a 500GB disk for O/S and programs and then add 2x1TB drives in a RAID 1 configuration? I'm more concerned with backing up my data - photos, DVDs, music, ... - than my O/S and programs. And I do not want want to put my data on the same drive as Windows. Is this confguration possible?

1. No, RAID 0 doesn't do much for a desktop system - but it doubles your chance of losing data.

2.  Yes, you can do that.
