Rebuilt and need an activation code?

So the mobo on my Dell desktop fried and when I called Dell they said they could not send me a new one. So I cannabalized as much of my old desktop and rebuilt it with a new mobo that I bought. When I rebooted, I got a message that I need to re-activate Windows to continue. I tried to do it online and it wouldn't. So I called MS and gave them a long code that should allow me to re-activate it. They said the code was invalid and that I needed to have my original 25 digit code that came with my computer. Try as I might, I can not find anything with a code on it. So my questions are, does anyone know why this would happen? Does anyone know where I can find my 25 digit code so I can call MS and re-activate Windows? Does anyone have suggestions for how to not get the re-activiation prompt? Thanks.

The machine should have colorful sticker with various colors and "Microsoft".  That sticker has your 25 digit product key.  If you lost the sticker and never wrote the key down, I don't see how you are going to retrieve it.

You could buy a Dell motherboard from eBay.  That shouldn't need to be activated.  Of course, that costs something.

Did you use a non-Dell motherboard or a Dell OEM board?

Non-OEM board. I tried to get an OEM board from Dell and they said they couldn't provide one. I even offered to buy it. This was of course after the obligatory dance with customer service who initially said it wouldn't be a problem to get one but that they would call me back in a day or two to let me know how much it would be. No call. Three days later, I call and viola, they can't give me one. So much inconsistancy.

Sorry, but you cannot use a Dell OEM reinstallation disc, with a non-Dell motherboard, because it's tied to Dell's BIOS.

You need to buy a new retail copy of windows.

Did you try calling Dell Spare Parts @ 1-800-357-3355 ext 7269937, M-F 7 to 7 CDT, for a replacement motherboard?
