Record with my Computer

I have a Dimension 8100.. yes I know it has been around for awhile going on 7 years.

Just had a new hard drive put in and I am up and going for a few more years.

I want to record audio for the workshops I do ONLINE....

I have a few questions I do hope someone can help....

1) What type of microphone can I use?

2) Where do I plug it in? I have looked everywhere and nothing is marked for microphone. Is that a bad sign?

3) How do I know if I can record or not? Where would I find this in my system.

Thanks
Krin

Thank you bossman I do appreciate your reply...

I tried the pink portal with a mircrophone but figured it may not have been the right type.

Im fairly certain your mic needs to have 1/8 plug to fit the imput. This is the same size as the portable device headphones that are out there.

Hey Krin
I have been using a Sony condenser mic  designed to be used with a mini disc recordewr . It works fairly well. On my old Demension L500r the mic goes in the pink(red?) input on theback of the machine.
If you dont have a recording program you can record on the windows sound recorder that could be in your system. You will have to look in your  control panel and find it to see if you have one. I guess it depends on how old your machine is. My old machine has one  so I would supect yours  may as well . I am sure there are more knowledgable folks here that could give a more precise answer tham me, hopefuly they could reply to you.
Good Luck!!

The "proper" mic is a "computer mic".  Some mics, such as a standard P.A. or karaoke mic will not work well as they have too low a signal for the PC.  Some other types may work.

If you want higher quality recordings, Shure is now making a USB connected mic.

The plugs are 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo plugs, although the mic input is mono and the "ring" connection provides 5VD for the computer (condenser) mic.
