removing card without using remove hardware option

I realise that the pc reads the 13 in 1 card reader as usb removable hard disk which is more than one, six or seven, cant remember. the drive name is the same for all (which initially cant tell SD card is which when i use it). And i thought that when removing the sd card, i close using the remove hardware option on the bottom task bar, and choose remove usb removable hdd. but i realise it removes all the usb drives. if it is external, i can plug in again to detect, but as internal, means restart.

Is this normal? or can just remove the cards from the reader directly without the need to choose the 'remove hardware safely' option?

'Remove hardware' performs any deferred (cached) writes and formally closes the file system (not doing so can sometimes corrupt a volume).  There is a provision in the spec for removing power but it is not commonly implemented in hardware and the devices are immunized from surges by first-make--last-break contacts (ground is first and last).

Sorry, can't advise how to get USB drives to appear as you wish in Windows.  I tended to have the opposite problem, Windows remembered every drive that had ever been plugged in and the list became cluttered displaying them when they weren't connected.  I don't think skipping 'remove hardware' will have any impact on this issue, and it could corrupt the external file system.

You could try setting the Policy for the card reader to "Optimize for quick removal" so it doesn't write cache any data and that should eliminate risk corruption if you just unplug a card without using Safely Remove Hardware icon in system tray.

Double-click My Computer
Right-click card reader and select Properties
Click Hardware tab
Highlight card reader on list
Click Properties button
Click Policies tab
Change setting to "Optimize for quick removal"
Click OK back to desktop

In theory, you should now be able to pull out any card in the reader, as long as it's not actively reading/writing a file.

When not using the card reader, the 4 list of usb drives are also listed..using the remove hardware option is not good, cos need to restart to recognise the card reader again else cant detect if insert a card again.

Will set to optimize for removal..but is everyone else having the card reader doing this as well for removal??
Also, if you want to change to optimize from desktop > computer > usb drive > etc , not able to change the settings to optimize. It is greyed out. And you will see that optimize for performance is selected instead. But if you go to device manager to change, you are able to, and the optimize for removal is already default for all the usb drives. strange.

Kind of regret getting the internal card reader..an external small portable card reader works fine. The internal card reader doesnt fit nicely to the bay furthermore. when u touch the card reader, it can be move sideways, up , down.

if removing the card for the internal reader is that bad, guess i shall remove the reader totally, no use.
