Replace stock CPU fan.

Is the stock CPU fan on the DELL Inspiron  530s replaceable?

Was thinking of replacing it with a "Arctic Cooling Alpine 11 Pro" or a "Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 LP" which supports the"Socket 775" I'm using.

Thing is, when CPU is high - the CPU Fan goes fast and is REALLY loud. I read a BIOS update can fix it, even though my BIOS is ver 1.0.5.

I just don't like toying with the BIOS, especially when I can't see any backup options or for that matter, 1 working BIOS that can be patched and a 2nd BIOS as a backup like some motherboard manufacturers.

So, is the fan replaceable?

The Dell CPU fan is a proprietary fan that contains additional electronics that "reports" status to the BIOS.  If you install a non-Dell fan you will always get a "fan failure" notice at boot up and will have to press F1 to continue the boot.  There's no way around the BIOS, that I know of,.

Well, I was able to change the motherboard into a new case. Same with the power supply. Yet I can't change a SIMPLE fan?

Oh, please....

If you can figure out what the electronics in a Dell fan is doing you could recreate that and eliminate the Fan Failure error.

You can change the fan, just that you will get the fan failure notice.  There are many posts on here and the old Dell users forum that confirm this.

Will a 12v to 7v adapter work for the CPU fan?
