Scan Disk Question

OK. I have a Dell Dimension 4100 and sometimes it shuts down properly and other times it doesn't. Even when I think it has shut down, the next morning I have scan disk running. My problem is that for some reason Scan Disk will not run a "Thorough" check and I when I try to defrag my hard drive, it gets half way done and says that I need to run scan disk.
When I attempt to run Scandisk, I get an error that says the program has shut down too many times and that I should shut off all programs in the background. The only one I have running is Windows. I'm unsure of how to shut down windows ME.
Can anyone help?
Thanks.

Are you sure you don't have any programs running in the background. Hit CTL-ALT-Delete and see what the list shows you that you are running. Click on all of them one at a time except Explore and Systray. Choose end task to shut each one of them down. At the end you should only have explore and systray running. Try scan disk again and see if it improves.

Option 2. Reboot and press CTRL-f5 while rebooting. This will get you into safe mode. Run scan disk and defrag in safe mode.

I have similar issue with Dimension 8100, Pentium 4. I get the "scan disk tried 10 times" message as well. Your solution of closing all background processes should work on any Dell system running Windows Millenium, no?

Thank you. Your first suggestion worked and I got both programs to run.
