Serial and Unique Identifier help

Ok here is the deal. I need a way of tracking my assets at work. They want me to hand write the serial number of not only the machine and monitor but also the Hard Drive. What I need to know is this...with the PC's I have been able to show that X serial number sequence means X PC model. I need to know if I can do the same with the HD I want to be able to scan the barcode for the serial number or that little tag that is on one end of the drive and tell my people Serial numbers X-Y are this model and size. If I can get them to buy into a serial number scan of the PC and HD then It will save a lot of work. If anyone has any ideas please let me know ASAP as I have a meeting this friday that I am supposed to present my case at.

You can also email me at dennis.long@ngc.com

Thanks for the help in advance.

Hi,

Not too sure about the Hard drive and the system's serial number giving you the model number and type. But for the monitor, the 4th to the 8th digits are the part number for that monitor...

Assuming you have a monitor that has a serial number MY - 0 - 23DDC - 46632 - 296 - 82LZ, this is how you would decode it...

MY - Product of origin (Malaysia)

0 - For future use

23DDC - Part Number

46632 - Manufacturer's Codes

296 - Date, month and year of Manufacture (I'm Sure, but not how these numbers are decoded)

82LZ - Batch Number

AJ

P.S. I heard hard drives also use the same 20 digit structure, you could check and see...

Hi,

Guess what...! The hard drives also have 20 digit serial numbers apart from several other bar codes. Which means it follows the same classification process.

AJ

P.S. : I dont think you'll get the answer for De-ciphering service tags for the system.
