Sndvol32.exe

Hi,
I am  new (today) and I have a problem  re Sndvol32.exe
From my internet research, it seems that this problem happens a lot - but the many discussions I have read come up with as many 'fixes'
1. With Windows XP - (Dell Dimension 5150 Computer) my volume icon on the toolbar at the bottom right of the screen no longer loads - so the icon for the slide volume setting is missing
2. I  went to start ..control panel..speech sounds audio devices...sounds & audio devices....properties...volume
it says NO AUDIO DEVICE and the device volume panel is 'greyed out' so no boxes can be accessed to place volume icon back in task bar.

3. I checked Media player for volume and CD's/DVD's  work fine  - but there is no YouTube or Mic Volume to use Skype to speak with my son who lives abroad - so a real problem here.

4. Researched and searched for programme Sndvol32.exe. on my computer - it found 'slider' icon labelled sndvol32    in c:|i386  136KB

Not sure what to do next given I  have sndvol32  in c:|i386  136KB on my computer anyway.
I scanned it  with AVG, in case infected, and it came up okay. Trouble shoot wizard says all is okay & that I have audio, so puzzled about this as cannot work out what to do.
Can I re-run  somehow? or re-set system back a couple of weeks prior to it disappearing?
Also if I bought a sound blaster plug in - would this provide on-line sound independently of my sndvol.32 problem?
Hope you can help
Thanks

Thank you for such a prompt response Firebero.

I am not too technical but will try to follow your advice here. The system came with no cd drivers or programmes to instal and apart from the odd bit of software, I have not had too much experience doing this kind of thing.

Can you possibly give some guidance on how I locate and instal the drivers you refer to?

Also can I screw this up and make it worse? - I get nervous about installation tasks - chip-set drivers/sigma Tel drivers sound too important not to understand what I am doing.

As I said I can play CD's/DVD's via Windows Media Player plus on-line videos that  download to Media Player -they work  fine using the media player controls as well as the mixer controls that are connected to the sndvol 32 file. Also RealPlayer will provide internet radio sound okay - so it seems so odd that this

other single volume control cannot just be reloaded somehow to reappear in the task bar.

Thanks again

Jumilladave

It would appear the SigmaTel audio is not properly installed, and in fact I'm surprised that any sound is working from your Control Panel error.

You can try the System Restore back to when it worked but I doubt that it will fix it.

Depending on what happened to cause the problem to start with, you should (1) install the intel chipset drivers (2) install the SigmaTel drivers and finally if the sndvol is still missing, see THIS  which refers to getting it back.    If all of this does not work, you are faced with a complete reinstall.  If your system has the Dell recovery partition, accessed by CTRL/F11 at boot up you can completely restore with that, otherwise a manual install will be required - reformat then (1) Install Windows (2) Install Dell Desktop System Software (on applicable models) (3) Install Intel Chipset Drivers (4) Install Device Drivers including Sound, Video, Ethernet, etc.

OH, Apparently from your second post it's just the volume control that is the problem.  Go to the link I referenced and it has instructions on how to get the volume control back.  Post back on how you make out after that and we will go from there is more is needed.

Hi Fireberd - just solved volume issue - & , as I hoped so simple it is embarrassing, especially as this end I have had computer experts fail to solve it who came round to assist.

I knew the disappearance of the task bar volume icon and the greying out of the Sounds and Devices property box was associated with uploading Firefox or maybe Chrome.
It disappearing whilst playing back an on-line video on a newly loaded browser.
I went and looked again at the Audio Tab (Sounds & Audio Devices) and discovered that for some reason the necessary Sigma tel Audio setting had been swapped with modem #0Line playback setting.
I did not do this and have since discovered that a combination of certain browsers with certain video/audio links, default to the modem setting, cancelling out the Sigma setting and away goes the volume icon and the 'put back' box is greyed out.
So overall a victory of simplicity but since FireFox I have found it does tend to have a mind of its own and currently sticking to Chrome or Internet E
Thanks for assistance
