Startup Items

On my new DIM 8400 with XP Prof I see 19 applications in the startup file under msconfig.  Are all these necessary?  It seems that I should be able to eliminate about half but I can't know for sure because I don't understand the abbreviations such as atiptaxx, msgtray, msmsgs, intelmem, pcmservice, ccapp, zlclient,sgtray,sndmon,rundll32p17,qttask,statusclient,sgtray,jusched, and on and on.  What is absolutely necessary to run windows?  Thanks

See the comprehensive list of possible programs that could start with Windows at the following site:

qttask.exe is an annoying little program that puts a QuickTime icon in your system tray.  You don't need it for watching QT movies.  It runs in the background and eats resources (on Win 98 at least).  If it's running in the background on Win XP and you want to get rid of it, do the following:

Do a file search for every instance on qttask.exe on your computer.  Rename them to something like qttask1.exe.  Disabling it on startup doesn't work permanently.  It tends to come back.  But renaming it seems to be for keeps.
