System memory errors

I have a Dimension 8400.  My CRT monitor became inop and I replaced with another monitor and then found out that I could not boot to the OS.  I ran Dell diagnostics and the only problems it found were with system memory.  All the memory tests failed and all said "suspected memory component located on system board at label Channel A  DIMM 0  .  I tested the RAM chips on another 84000 and they tested good and worked fine.  I am suspecting that some sort of power surge took out both the monitor and the motherboard.  Does this sound like a bad motherboard??

It doesn't sound like anything yet. Do you have other RAM you can try?

Yes, I could pull RAM out of another computer and try that, but I guess I thought testing my RAM in another computer was good enough to show that the RAM chips themselves were good.  But, then again, I know just enough to be dangerous!!!   I might add that I also got an error message reading battery voltage low-- I did replace the battery prior to running the diagnostics.

Might I recommend MemTest86 (free program)?  I find it to be much more useful for diagnosing possible memory stick issues.  You'll need a RW CD drive, and the ability to burn ISO images, all of which you can accomplish for free by googling.  Let me know if you want help.
