Temp Files in Windows Folder

I recently discovered that all .tmp files are being saved in C:\Windows folder and no longer in C:\Windows\Temp. How can I correct this? Should the registry be modified? I'm experienced enough to make the changes in the registry? Can someone help?

Leon, do not change the registry. Remove all .tmp files from Windows. If you still have a Windows\Temp folder, empty it. It may simply be too full. Leave all contents in the waste basket for a few days to make sure everything works. If you no longer have a Windows\Temp folder, create one. Often, you will be given the location of temp files before they are saved. Change their location to the proper folder before saving. If you are not given a choice, drag them into the Temp folder. Remember that .tmp files are just that, temporary. Once they have been used, you do not have to keep them.

no folder can get "FULL" .... what are you saying. I am positive his problem is not cause the folder was full. Some programs may be depositing old or unused files in his windows directory

Thanks. I am not concerned about the folder being full. My concern is temp files, log files, etc that were normally saved in C:\Windows\Temp are no longer being saved there. Instead they are being directed to in the Windows folder only and all these temp files are now bein scattered within the Windows folder.

Well, that is true, and not true. A temp folder with a massive amount in it may not function properly. Not my idea but Windows'.

Hey Don! Congrats for the right answer! Leon, use Find Files or Folders to remove all .tmp files scattered in C, conveniently. A lot of temp files can interfere in weird ways with Windows. Just read all the posts.

Leon,

Add the following line to your autoexec.bat file in your root directory:

SET TEMP=c:\windows\temp

or see if there is already a line in your autoexec.bat that directs the temp folder to be c:\windows. If so type REM and a space in front of that line. Save and reboot.

AHA!!! I THINK THIS IS WHAT I MIGHT NEED TO DO LAWRENCE. YOU'LL NEVER SEE ME IN THE REGISTRY. IF IT COMES TO THAT, I'LL HIRE IT DONE (AFTER EXTRACTING 2-QUARTS OF BLOOD FROM THE TECHNICIAN AS A SECURITY DEPOSIT).

Thanks. That worked.

HI, LAWRENCE. IMAGINE MEETING YOU HERE. YOU WERE HELPING ME WITH MEMORY MANAGER ERROR.
I HIT THIS TOPIC AND DECIDED TO CHECK IT---THIS TOPIC SOUNDED LIKE WHERE ZDNET SAID TO GO TO DELETE MY KAK WORMS. I KICKED THEM OUT OF TEMP FILES AND THEN OUT OF MY WASTE BASKET. RAN NORTON A COUPLE OF TIMES AND DIDN'T HAVE AN VIRUSES. DO I READ FROM WHAT YOU ARE SAYING THERE MAY BE IN THE TEMP FILES AND MIGHT ALSO BE IN A WINDOWS FOLDER. SHUCKS, I WAS SO PROUD OF MY UNSKILLED SELF FOR GETTING THE WORMS OUT OF MY TEMP FILES/WASTE BASKET.
I GUESS I COULD CHANGE MY E-MAIL NAME/PASSWORD (THAT I'VE HAD 4+ YEARS) SO THE KAK WORM COULDN'T FIND ME IF HE/SHE/IT GOT MY ADDRESS BY INVADING SOME OF MY FRIENDS' ADDRESS BOOK. THAT, I THINK, WOULD BE MY LAST RESORT.

Again thanks for your help. You are right "temp files can interfere in weird ways with Windows."
