Updating the BIOS when adding memory

I have a dimension 8200 with a half gig of ram. I have purchased a full gig to add to it (2x512), and have read that I am supposed to update the BIOS when I do this. How do I update the BIOS? I can't find any directions for this. Do I update before or after putting in the new memory chips? Can I put the new ones in slots 3 & 4, or should they be put in 1 & 2? Thanks in advance for your help.

You don't need to update the BIOS to add memory and it's not advisable for a system out of warranty.  If the update fails it can ruin your motherboard.

Put the memory in the slots occupied by the memory connectors.  You can tell them apart because they're much thinner than the memory chips.  The link below explains how to do this.

I think maybe "update BIOS" means you need to clear NVRAM (BIOS) to force it to recognize the added memory. Some times, BIOS doesn't notice the upgrade on it's own and you have to clear the settings to force it look at all the hardware again.

Follow instructions in your user manual to clear NVRAM after you install the new RAM. Or, you could always pop the battery off the motherboard, after installing the RAM, while the case is open, and press/hold the power button on front of tower for about 15 sec before replacing the battery (right side up!). Then close the case and boot the system.
