upgrade Dell Vostro 200
Hello
I have a computer dell vostro 200 with a 300 W power supply . I need to upgrade the processor and the video card . Now the computer has a core 2 duo E 4400 processor and a geforce 8500 GT video card . The computer has also a tv tuner , 3g ddr2 sdram.and a Sata 2 drive 7200rpm. The upgrade will be a core 2 duo E 7500 processor and a Geforce 8800 GT ( or a Geforce 8800 GTX ) . The question is what power supply I need for the upgrade ? And another question is if any of core 2duo processor ( including core 2 duo 8500 ) is compatible with the motherboard ? Thank you .

Hi 8hercules,
The CPU upgrade is a frequently discussed topic, so I'm just going to provide a link. Here's a thread on CPU options.
On the video card upgrade, it depends on which case you have. The mini-tower takes full sized cards. Is that what you have?

Assuming that you have the Vostro 200 MT and not the so-called, SlimLine version.
The 300w PSU should work fine with either of the Geforce video cards listed in your post, I have an Inspiron 530 MT, that is the same as the Vostro 200 MT and have been running a GeForce 9400 GT video card without any issues using the default 300w power supply.
If you wish to upgrade the power supply, most generic standard ATX power supply units can be installed, with either a 24-pin or 20+4-pin main motherboard power connector, with or without the on/off switch.
You should be able to buy a compatible power supply from either a local or online computer store.
Note: You require a power supply with four SATA power connectors.
The following Core 2 Duo processors are compatible:-
Wolfdale Core 2 Duo, E8400, 3.0GHz, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, E0
Wolfdale Core 2 Duo, E8500, 3.16GHz, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, C0
Wolfdale Core 2 Duo, E8600, 3.33GHz, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, E0
Prior to upgrading the processor, check that you have BIOS Version 1.0.16, installed when support for new Intel CPU's was added.

The 5670 and 6670 cards are about as powerful as the 8800GT but use much less power and are compatibile with your power supply.

I think it's a minitower : height 36 cm , with 17.5 cm , depth 41 cm .

You have a Vostro 200 Mini Tower and not the Slimline version.

The old power supply has the fan placed vertically at the back of the case. New power supply has the fan inside of the case horizontally . Are they compatible with my old case ?

Why I require 4 SATA conectors ? The computer has only one drive and one dvdwriter .

It's because Dell builds the Vostro 200 MT to support four SATA drives, you could add an additional hard drive and a second optical drive.

The 8500 GT card has enough space in my minitower ? I saw in a picture on Google the card is much longer than the pci express slot assuming it will get over the power cable jack of the hard drive and dvdwriter . Does somebody tried to put a 8500 GT card in a Dell vostro 200 minitower ?
