Vostro 200 CPU Upgrade

Does anybody have a CPU compatibility list for the Vostro 200?  I've fallen back on the computer knowledge curve and find so many processors available. Right now it has an  E2140 and I'm looking at something like the E6300 - a bit faster and not too expensive.  I see one at Newegg for $78 with free shipping.  TIA

Hi I put this in my machine yesterday:

 Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 3.33GHz LGA775 6MB Dual Core 65W TDP 45nm

I had trouble with the ram I bought to waiting to upgrade to 8gb when I get the proper type but the CPU is in and running fine.

What is the best CPU for upgrading the Vastro 200?

RichCal

It depends which motherboard was factory installed.

The Vostro 200 was built with two different motherboards, either a G33M02, or a G33M03.

If your Vostro 200 was purchased with either a Core 2 Duo, Pentium Dual-Core or Celeron processor and a 300w power supply, this system usually has a FoxConn G33M02 motherboard, that only supports Core 2 Duo, Pentium Dual-Core and Celeron processors.

If you have a Core 2 Quad processor and a 350w power supply, you have the FoxConn DG33M03 motherboard.

This motherboard can be used for both Quad 4 & Core 2 Duo processors.

Which version of the motherboard do you have installed?

Richcal

the CPU I put in was

Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 3.33GHz LGA775 6MB Dual Core 65W TDP 45nm E0

If you check on Amazon its around 50 quid.

I am waiting on the new RAM I ordered from crucial , Bev has linked the crucial site that shows which RAM is compatible with the vostro you just need to pick one from the list. Hope this helps

Hi, Bev,

I am looking to upgrade the CUP on a Vostro 200 with the G33M02 motherboard and 300W power supply.  From everything I have read, it looks like the Wolfdale E8400 is the way to go.  What is the difference between C0 and E0 the descriptions?

Either the of the following will work:

Wolfdale Dual Core E8400, 3.00G, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, C0
Wolfdale Dual Core E8400, 3.00G, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, E0
Wolfdale Dual Core E8500, 3.16G, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, C0
Wolfdale Dual Core E8500, 3.16G, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, E0
Wolfdale Core 2 Duo, E8600, 3.33GHz, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, E0

Prior to installing the processor, check that you have BIOS Version 1.0.16 installed, when support for new Intel CPU's was added.

Regards to: 'What is the difference between C0 and E0 the descriptions?'

That refers to the processor's 'Stepping' the EO is the latest version and refers to minor performance improvements, but there's nothing significant between the two.

Either can be installed.

Thank you very much.  One last thought....does it matter that the FSB in the PC is 800?

Bev,

Two quick questions... (actually three)

1) Can I use the floppy port (IDE) to power an IDE DVD-RW?

2) Is there a port somewhere on the mother board that will allow the use of a FLASH DRIVE module?

3) Assuming no to either or both of the above, I would rather update the whole mother board with a current quad core or better.  Is there an ASUS or GIGABYTE board that will fit with surgery on the box.

1) No, the floppy motherboard connector is a different size [34-pin] to IDE/ATA connector [40-pin]

2) No.

3) You could use a Micro ATX motherboard, but there could be issues with the rear I/O plate and the front panel wiring connectors.

Also, unless you already replaced the operating system with a retail copy, you probably need to add to the budget, a new retail, or OEM copy of windows, as Dell OEM copies of Windows are tied to their BIOS.

Bev,

I checked

http://www.guildwars2guru.com/topic/32355-for-dell-users-guide-to-reuse-case-for-aftermarket-motherboard-to-upgrade-your-cpu/

per your suggestion.  A $49 OEM case would be a far better option.  The power supply would be a fair expense but would allow a 500W supply with lots of options.  Coolmax makes the power supply and Roswell makes a cheap case; all for a total cost of about $60-$75.  One could easily build a custom system for $400-$500.  BUT, why would you when you guys and HP both have systems ready to go for less.

Thanks for all your comments...  There are some of us out here that love this stuff (often to the detriment of our spouse :-(.

Bev,

Many thanks.  I figured as much.  The hardware is rock solid, just old.  I have bits and pieces of several Dell boxes; most recently a Dimension 9300.  I was hoping to salvage some usability but alas, it is not to be.  As for the OS, that will not be an issue as I am a 10+ year Ubuntu (Linux) user currently running 15.04 64 bit (on the original Dell Vostro 200!)

Did anyone answer your question? One of our computers has the same 440 and we want to upgrade the processer to something much faster.

So, do we use any of the 800Mhz CPU's?
