What processor to get?? (new computer)

I'm looking to purchase a new computer - Mostly for gamming - Was looking to spend around $2500-$3600 What processor should I get? The newer "duel" processors are new to me.... Which of these are better (or that much better for the buck and reliability) Core™2 Duo Processor E6700 (4MB L2 Cache,2.66GHz,1066 FSB) Core™2 Q6600 Quad-Core (8MB L2 cache,2.4GHz,1066FSB) Intel® Core™2 Extreme QX6700 (8MB L2 Cache,2.66GHz,1066 FSB) Core™2 Duo processor E6420 (4MB L2 Cache,2.13GHz,1066 FSB Thanks for any and all advice...

All of those are decent CPU's. For gaming...I would definately go with the Q6600. At this point there are not many games will take advantage of all 4 cores, but Crysis will and so will many others that are soon to be released.

lloyd95,

One thing to consider is that Intel has already announced a major processor price drop due in July. I think you can probably find the prices posted somewhere with Google and they are significant. I found them see below.

FYI,

The Intel 3rd Qtr price suts will be on July 22nd(much earlier than I thought).  Here are the details:

Model------ Core----- Speed (GHz)-- FSB (MHz)---- L2----- Cores-- Price (Jul22)
Q6700--Kentsfield----------2.66----------1066------4MBx2-----4--------$530
Q6600--Kentsfield----------2.40----------1066------4MBx2-----4--------$266
E6850-----Conroe----------3.00----------1333------4MB--------2--------$266
E6750-----Conroe----------2.66----------1333------4MB--------2--------$183
E6550-----Conroe----------2.33----------1333------4MB--------2--------$163
E6540-----Conroe----------2.33----------1333------4MB--------2--------$163
E4500-----Conroe----------2.22-----------800------2MB--------2--------$133
E4400-----Conroe----------2.00-----------800------2MB--------2--------$113

For those looking to upgrade with the new mobo, this should give you some NICE options.  Note that the Q6700 is NOT the same as the QX6700.  These will NOT OC via the multiplier.

Thanks for the tips / advice -

So, waiting until July definitely seems smart - As we should see an overall price drop -

Now, are any of these processors.....related to some of the problems I keep reading about regarding the DELL 710 systems ....

Is the 710 XPS system worth buying?.....or is there an internal problem with that system stability??

Also is the QX  "better" then simply the Q  processors...

Meaning is a QX6700 better then a Q6600 (performace wise).

Thanks again

lloyd95,

The processors have not been the problem with the 710, though if you are buying wait for the 720 at this point. The difference that the "X" makes in the processors is that they are considered to be in the EXtreme line by Intel and have their CPU clock multipliers unlocked which is better for overclocking. In general a higher number relates to higher clock speed. You can find all of that searchibg the web.
