Why on earth do you need PowerDVD 5 - specifically?

Because i think its the one that came with my comp. plus its free and it plays my dvds and installs a decoder for my tv tuner to work. Ive tryed to get something better but seems evertime they want 59 bucks or something after the "trial period" Is there something else i can do? That wont cost me that you know of? I really do apreciate all the help.
