What procedure are you using? A bad_pool_caller is generally a drivers problem and that is a bit unusual on installation. You need to begin by disconnecting everything attached to the tower with the exception of power, monitor, keyboard, and mouse. You then need to boot from the installation CD and delete the old system partition, followed by choosing to install Windows into the unallocated space created by deletion of the old partition.
Once you have Windows installed you should install the device drivers in the following order: Intel chipset driver, Video adapter driver, Network adapter driver, Sound adapter driver, and if you have one, the modem driver. You can fudge the order of all of these with the exception of the chipset driver. If that one is not installed first some of the remaining drivers will not install, or will not install properly.
After the drivers are installed you should update the Windows installation with the Windows XP Service Pack 3 update, found here: Win XP Service Pack 3 Update. You should download this before attempting the install and store it either on a CD or a USB memory key. This way you can perform the update without being attached to the internet.
Once you have completed the above, install your anti-virus or internet security suite, connect to the internet, and update first the anti-virus, and then Windows. At that point you are ready to install your applications.
