Boot Error message "Checkpoint D0"

When I start up my xps 435mt right after the Dell Splash Screen I get the following message:

"Alert previous attempts boot this sytem have failed at checkpoint D0"

Working with Dell we have replaced the motherboard and hard drive and updated the BIOS.

Two days latter i Received the message again. I now have the Tech coming back with the following items: Motherboard, Memory Chips and new Video Card.

Has anyone have this problem?

Can someone tell me what Checkpoint D0 is looking at on the system to create the error.

Don

**UPDATE AND EDIT FROM DELL**

Please update to BIOS revision 1.1.4, which was web posted today to address this issue.

vett01,

As with you, I noticed that as soon as my Checkpoint Errors disappeared, my computer stopped going to sleep.  I haven't seen Checkpoint errors in nearly a month.  Really odd.  These two issues are probably related as there are others experiencing the exact two problems.  Also, I have a ATI Radeon HD4850.

I'm on Windows 7 RTM and I still get these errors.  Like everyone else, it seems to happen after a reboot when the machine has been through a few sleep/wake cycles.

I have the ATI Radeon HD 3450 video card...

So, it happens with Vista and Windows 7, with a number of video cards, and with at least two PC models (435MT and 8000).

ClaudeD123, looks like we are doomed !  I tend to think that the 435 and the 8000 are the same machine with a different case with the same internal parts.  Do you think Dell can grab one of these machines and figure out what the problem is ?  Doesn't Dell do any testing on their own ?

I've had my 435mt for 10 months and have seen the problem randomly the entire time. I have not paid attention to any connection it might have. In my case, the message flashes on the screen very fast as it boots, and it goes right on running.

After looking at alot of the recent replies I noticed it sounds like some people only get the error messages.  Is anyone elses computer freezing up during boot up?  If I put my computer in sleep mode or boot up in the morning the computer locks up during boot.  I have to manually shut it down and reboot.  Then during the next boot up I see the error code at checkpoint D0.  Anyone else having the same issue?  If not, I can see why alot of people are just dealing with this issue.

datwoodbe,

I've frozen on boot and failed to come back from sleep a handful of times.  My problem is with Photoshop crashing after a boot-with-error-message.  As a practical matter, I guess they're the same -- we don't have fully functioning PCs in that we cannot put them to sleep without paying a penalty.

datwoodbe,

Yes, my Studio XPS 8000 has occasionally (not always) frozen at initial boot-up from shutdown.  It freezes at the Dell logo, with the progress bar holding at about 1/3 completion.  I have always just waited and it finally completes, after freezing for about 1 minute, and fully boots into Windows 7.

Since I followed Dell-Chris M's previous instructions about resetting the BIOS, I have not seen the "Checkpoint DO" error message.  However, I have experienced the freeze-up occasionally.

For the record, I cannot remember a time when my system has frozen at boot-up or any other time.

Just a thought, are you using Windows hibernation?  I am not, so I'm just wondering.  I'm using the "Dell recommended" settings, which do not hibernate the machine (it does enable the "hybrid" sleep that creates a hibernation file in case the machine loses power while sleeping).

Also, some of us have compared video cards, but I thought I'd share the reset of my configuration in case it offers some clue:

  • Studio XPS 435 MT (Core i7 920)
  • 6GB RAM
  • Western Digital 500GB hard disk (I think it's the "Caviar Blue" http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=301)
  • ATI Radeon HD 3450
  • Optiarc DVD+-RW
  • TSSTcorp DVD-ROM
  • Dell supplied card reader (TEAC USB)
  • Dell USB Keyboard & Mouse ( 330-6098? /J660D)
  • Windows 7 x64 (Formally Vista x64)

I have several external devices devices connected: Western Digital 500GB FireWire, USB Hub, a Lexmark scanner/printer/copier, Canon Selphy photo printer, sometimes a PDA...

datwoodbe, et al,

I have had my 435 Vista 64 since April and have experienced just about every problem described in this thread.  Like most, once I get past the checkpoint codes and freezes, the machine runs fine.  I am not a gamer with a lot of options and basically use the machine for Internet and Photoshop work.  I first started to notice problems months ago.

The computer would go to sleep but then come out of sleep after 30 to 45 minutes.  It would do this consistently.  I researched this on the Internet and found the following cure.  I had to disable the wake-up function on the NIC and disable the Windows screen saver.  Without doing both, it would still come out of sleep.  Now it goes to sleep and stays asleep as it should.  However, about one time out of ten, it will freeze coming out of sleep (it used to freeze occasionally before I made the NIC change).  By freeze I mean it will kick the fan on, start to access the HHD and then stop.  I do not get a display, the white light on the front panel is full on, no more HHD activity, no mouse or keyboard function, nothing.  I have to hard boot the machine by turning the power off and back on.  During boot, I get the Failed Checkpoint D0 Alert.

I am using a HP all-in-one printer on a wireless network.  Normally when I bring the computer out of sleep, I get a message from the HP software that the communications to the printer has been established and everything works fine.  However, again about one out of every ten times, I get a message form the HP software that printer monitoring software has stopped working (other computers in the house can still access the printer through the access point).  Also, the MSN toolbar on IE8 does not load and instead displays a message that is loading an updated version of the toolbar (which of course it isn't).  Whenever this series of events happens and I restart, I get the Failed Checkpoint B1 Alert.

More recently, whenever I have to power off the PC, it will not restart.  It freezes just like it does coming out of sleep as I described above.  I may have to go through several attempts before it will finally turn on.  Then I get a Checkpoint Alert.

I have seen other Alerts such as C1 and I think B2 but I do not recall the circumstances.

This is a very frustrating situation, and I feel at some point the PC will just fail to start.  I was about to contact Dell but after reading these posts it appears there is no solution at hand.  I have purchased about seven Dell computers over the years including those for my kids in college.  The 435 is by all measures the most problematic Dell I have owned.

jimharte,

I am using the Dell recommended settings for sleep mode with hybrid sleep enabled.  I am not using hybernation.  This is my hardware configuration:

  • Studio XPS 435 MT (Core i7 920)
  • Dell supplied 4GB RAM
  • Dell supplied Western Digital WDC6400AAKS
  • Dell supplied ATI Radeon HD 4670
  • Dell supplied DVD+-RW
  • Dell supplied card reader (TEAC USB)
  • Dell supplied USB Mouse
  • Dell supplied Logitech illuminated USB keyboard
  • HP C7180 all-in-one printer/copier/fax
  • Dell supplied Vista x64 Home Premium Edition
  • BIOS 1.0.13
  • The checkpoint alerts are a nuisance that Dell should be able to fix.  Not starting and freezing up is worrisome and a sign of a bigger issue.

OK, this makes me nervous.  I've seen this error as well but the boot continues quickly.  So far no related issues seen (crashes etc.).  However, I've sunk another grand into this machine with second WD 1 TB HD, 64 GB SSD in the 3.5 bay, LG BR burner, 650w PSU, and a GTX 275 is on the way. I'd hate to think this mobo or the BIOS is incapable of running stable and subject to errors that progressively get worse.  I've jumped the gun and posted raving reviews too.  75% of my earnings depend on me having a stable computer.  Yeah I know, build your own next time.

Dell, I hope you are listening.  I'll be checking this thread for a viable solution.

Xav8tor if 75% of your earnings are generated by having a computer, and you were hell bent on a Dell, you should have went with the Optiplex Series. I have purchased 3 Optiplex Series for clients and they have no issuse like the Studio XPS Series. Or a another choice would have been a Lenovo high end laptop.

Of course if you don't want or use the sleep function you will be all set. Also once the computer is booted there is no impact to performance.

Send it back ASAP or cancel the order. The problem is NOT FIXED with the Studio XPS Series and most likely Dell will never fix it. I don't believe the problem can be fixed with a BIOS update and Dell WILL NOT honor anyones XPS that is out of warranty, even if the problem has been reported from day 1. Remember, DELL is #1 and the customer is #2.

I recently bought a Dell Studio XPS 8000 with the 1TB HD, GTS 240 and 8 gigs of ram. I experience this checkpoint error as well. Its hard for me to say if its associated with sleep mode cause i usually turn off my cpu as soon as im done with it. I seem to usually notice the error only on the first cold boot of the day.

About 3 days ago i disabled the fast boot option in the bios (it doesn't make it boot that much slower). I haven't seen the error yet since i did this possibly a coincidence but i was getting it pretty consistently on my initial boot each day before this change. Ill keep posted if i see any changes or can add any information.

Thanks for your time in reading this hopefully we can find a solution.

Edit - i forgot to mention i am running 64 bit Windows 7

Randy,

I also have a WD500 MYBOOK USB External drive and vista 64 bit.  Once I have more time I will try to post all of my computers information.  From previous posts it sounds like others have vista 64 bit as well.  May not have anything to do with the errors but it doesn't hurt to look for similarities in our systems.  Oh yeah, they are all 435mt models.  I think I just figured it out Dell!  :emotion-15:
