Boot Error message "Checkpoint D0"
When I start up my xps 435mt right after the Dell Splash Screen I get the following message:
"Alert previous attempts boot this sytem have failed at checkpoint D0"
Working with Dell we have replaced the motherboard and hard drive and updated the BIOS.
Two days latter i Received the message again. I now have the Tech coming back with the following items: Motherboard, Memory Chips and new Video Card.
Has anyone have this problem?
Can someone tell me what Checkpoint D0 is looking at on the system to create the error.
Don

ClaudeD123, dougdstecklin,
stanel has the following USB devices connected to the PC. I have asked him to test with only the USB mouse and keyboard connected. List your USB devices and do the same.
stanel = Keyboard, Mouse, 4 port USB hub, Printer, DVD drive, Connection for a camera
ClaudeD123 =
dougdstecklin = I have booted the computer before with just the keyboard and mouse attached and it still freezes. I now have a power strip that can turn on and off all peripherals plugged into it with a remote control. I boot the computer up first and then push the remote control button to turn on all peripherals after boot and never have the issue with boot freezes.

Chris, I'm not sure what I'd be testing. As long as I don't put my PC to sleep, I can reboot 100 times without a problem even with my USB devices connected. Even if I put my PC to sleep, there is no guarantee that it won't come back from sleep. The only real problem I've had has been the Photoshop crashes after sleep and reboot, but that can take anywhere from 1/2 to 2 hours before it occurs (i.e., I don't have a particular sequence that reliably makes it happen, it just happens sometime during the edit).
I'll catalog my USB devices more fully tomorrow, but I have a USB hub, 2 USB HD, 1 USB CompactFlash card reader, and a Microsoft wireless keyboard & mouse that comes in through USB.

Dell Keyboard, Dynex Mouse, Dell Printer, 1394 cable for camcorder, Dell monitor, comcast modem, Dell speakers
I just realized that the mouse and keyboard are powered up through the computer and not the remote controlled power strip. I never have freezes when I use the power strip remote, so I can safely assume the mouse and keyboard are not causing the issue.

Can everyone else verify that if only the USB mouse and keyboard plugged into rear USB ports (all other USB devices are disconnected) fixes the long boot issue?

I have the Studio XPS and had all of the boot up error codes. See my previous posts. I fixed the coming out of sleep problem by adjusting the power settings on the NIC, AND disabling the screen saver. The boot error codes and freeze on boot-up were resolved with BIOS 1.1.4. I have a USB mouse and keyboard plugged into the rear of the PC and no other devices plugged in. My PC works as expected and sleeps as expected.

Jim,
Could you go into a little more detail on how you adjust the power settings on the NIC? and disable the screen saver. My biggest issue with this computer is the fact that I can't put my computer to sleep. I have to turn it on and off every time I use it unless I want it pulling 300 Watts the whole day.
Thanks,
Doug

Doug,
My system is runnig Vista 64 and the NIC is an Intel 82567LF-2.
I got my PC last April and immediately had an issue with the PC going to sleep but coming out of sleep by itself after a few minutes. It would do this repeatedly. So I searched the Internet for articles regarding the problem and found a site that described several things to try. Much of the discussion centered around the NIC, so I made the adjustments suggested on the web site. There were no negative effects on the performance of the system, and it seemed to lessen how frequently the computer awakened on its own. However, it would still awake at random times on its own. Out of frustration I tried one of the other suggestions on the web site which was to disable the screen saver. It didn't sound logical to me but I tried it anyway. Amazingly that fixed the problem. My computer goes to sleep as it should and no longer awakes on its own.
The "Checkpoint" error codes and freezes on power up continued after I fixed the sleep problem but were resolved with the latest BIOS change. Now everything works fine.
The NIC settings I changed are on the power management tab of the device properties.
Power Save Options = all boxes checked, Wake on LAN = all boxes unchecked.
My Screen Saver is set to = NONE
For Power Options in the Control Panel, I use the Dell Recommended setting modified to
Disply Off = 15 min., Sleep = 30 min.
In the advanced portion of the settings, I have
Allow Hybrid Sleep = ON, Hibernate = NEVER, USB Selective Suspend = Disabled.
I believe these are all of the things I changed but it has been several months since I did this so I can't be certain.
Hope this helps, Jim

I have the same NIC card. In my power settings there is a box "alow the network card to wake up the computer" I just unchecked the box and i will see if this corrects the sleep problem.

Jim,
Thanks for taking the time to write a detailed response. I was able to change everything you mentioned. I Have not tried to put my computer to sleep yet. I will post the result when I do. Fingers crossed.

go into device manager under network adapters open the adapter then click on advanced at the
bottom of the list (on mine anyways) there is a setting called "wake on link" set it to disabled that should stop it from wakeing up
here is some pics of it

Chris from Dell,
I have been dealing with my computer freezing on boot and not staying in sleep mode ever since I got it in June of last year. I hope I am not speaking to soon, but since I changed the advanced power settings that Jim recommended my computer has gone to sleep and stayed asleep. Using the Belkin remote power strip I can also boot my computer without it freezing up. As far as I am concerned my issues with this computer have been resolved and I will not be returning it to Dell. You may want to let other people with this issue know about these boot and sleep fixes.
While I am not happy with this computer purchase, I at least don't have to return it and start the transfer of files and programs process all over again.(The 1st Dell computer I was sent in June had other issues and had to be returned)
Thanks Jim for the great advice!

mrg3dit2002,
I'm not having an issue. I was just describing what I did for someone else to try. I must have a different version driver than the one you show in the picture. The setup on mine is significantly different. The good news is that the settings in both approaches seem to achieve the same result.

Just reporting back in to let everyone know the fix that Jim recommended to keep the computer from jumping in and out of sleep has worked perfectly for the last 4 days.
Thanks again Jim.

Thanks for the come back . I too have down loaded the new bios and also changed start up in setup to my hard drive and stopped sleep and hibernate will see if error stops although it dawns on me that I should have done 1 at a time so as to verify which was the culprit. Thanks again Ralf45
