Computer skipping/freezing problems

After a few hours of being on my pc will start to have short freezes(0.5-2 sec.) that happen periodically. The longer the computer is on after they start the more often they happen until the point where the computer can barely be used anymore. They are almost like the computer is having a bad case of the hiccups. The mouse gets really hard to use when this is happening, and any music going on will sound like a broken record (same 1 second part of the track plays over and over). I have the latest drivers so I don't know what the problem is. I even reloaded Windows ME. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having the same problem and I'm running Win 98 SE. I tried turning off the power management scheme (i.e. always on and no power down). I don't remember when it started.

I am showing 53% of my system resources free and out of 195940 Kb total memory, 2192 Kb available memory. I am only running AOL, and Norton Antivirus autoprotect.

Win 98 SE
Dimension XPS T500 192 MB DRAM
WDC AC29100D - 8.5 GB hard drive
Maxtor 2R015H1 - 14.2 GB hard drive

Samsung CD-R/RW SW-4048
Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-M1212

US RObotics 56K voice win 1806
Creative Sound Blaster PCI 512
I am running AOL 7.0 (don't like it but honey does).

Any help would be appreciated.

sky king and jimbeaux1,
I believe you'll find the resource in this post of use in resolving your issues.

Have either of you installed any file sharing apps such as Kazaa, Limewire, Grokster, Morpheus or AudioGalaxy? If so you've got spyware contributing to this problem and quite possibly a virus as well.

same here. tried the startup thing and the problem doesn't seem to be system resources.

it seems to skip/freeze after the hard-disks power down.

any other ideas?

The only thing I am running at start-up right now is the bare essentials so I don't know why my system resources should be low. But after reading that I opened up the system configuration utility just to see. I was surprised to get a message when it started. It said that environment variables were found in the legacy files AUTOEXEC.BAT and/or CONFIG.SYS and the variables were moved to the windows registry.

I disabled everything in the environment tab that showed up and restarted. When I went back to msconfig, I got the same message as last time and all the stuff was still enabled. Wierd. Can someone tell me what this stuff is. Also, what are Static VxDs?

My computer still has freezing problems so I probably don't think the low resources are caused by start-up programs.

I spoke with a Dell technician today, he says its probably the system board and that it needs replacing. Mine is out of warranty so I'm SOL.

does anyone agree?
