Dimension 3100C - driver problems
Can anyone help me on the following:
After reinstalling Windows XP on my Dell Dimension 3100C I face two main problems:
- I cannot locate the driver for the PCI-bus, so my wireless PCI-adapter is not working properly
- The onboard soundcard is not working properly, that is he is not recognising that there is an audiocard present in the mixer configuration.
Any suggestions on how to solve this?

It sounds like you skipped the Intel chipset drivers (a common mistake). The chipset drivers MUST be installed BEFORE installing the sound drivers or the sound drivers will not find the sound module. One of the prime things the chipset drivers do is define (identify) all the devices on the motherboard.
On a reinstall the correct and required install sequence is (1) Install Windows (2) Install Intel Chipset Drivers (3) Install Device Drivers including sound, video, ethernet, etc.
If, as I suspect you skipped the chipset drivers, install them and then the Dell sound drivers. Installing the chipset drivers will probably fix the PCI adapter problem too.
In most cases, where the chipset drivers were skipped, you can just install them as noted and then the device drivers but in a few isolated cases it will take a new proper install sequence reinstall to get eveything working.
HERE is the Dell downloads for the 3100C. You can download any missing drivers.

I had this problem of no sound device being visible in the control panel after a re-intstall of windows XP. I have followed the instructions of Installing the Chipset driver and then the audio driver above but the problem is not fixed.
The SIGMATEL Audio driver - STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio that I downloaded is only shown as an "optional" driver on the download page. I am wondering if there is an "compulsory" driver that I need as well and if so where can I get it?

Went1, do you have a 3100C and the same issue or do you have a different model PC? which could be a totally different problem.
The SigmaTel is the ONLY audio for the 3100C. There is an "Audigy Invitation" but that is not the sound driver, it's a software add on to the sound driver (optional at extra cost when ordered).
As noted, installing the chipset driver and then the sound fixes most but in a few cases a new and correct install sequence is needed.

Fireberd. Many thanks for your swift response. Yes I do have a 3100C, so it looks like I now need to find out how to do a "new and correct install sequence". Many thanks again

Fireberd: the link onward from the installation procedure (from CD) says to use the following order:
1. Windows
2. DSS
3. Chipset
4. Video
You did not mention DSS I think? I am trying to fix a Dimension 3100C XP SP3. I accepted a Microsoft Update for the video driver ( Intel 82915G) and it caused it to fail: would not boot. Rebuilt but not from Dell CDs (they were corrupted, and the recovery partition was also unusable). After restoring Windows SP3 , adding the Ethernet driver so I could download stuff, and then adding the essential updates, Device Manager reported both Video and Sound issues. Fixed the Sound issue ok, but then tried the Video driver - system crashed on restart! Had just set a restore point so was able with difficulty to get back to it: only safe mode with command prompt would work (used rstui.exe).
Worth trying DSS then chipset then video, rather than go back to reinstalling Windows first?
