Error in Windows XP upon Initial User Login

This error returns whenever the machine is shut off. Upon powering up , Windows XP boots to the login screen showing all available users. Upon selection of any of users for the fist time after powering up the computer, Windows displays the "Windows has recovered from a serious error...." message.

Windows then continues into the login and brings us to the user's desktop as it should. This error occurs regardless who is selected from the users list the first time.

Once the initial login is made, this error does not return. This error does not return when users are switched or logged off, so long as the machine is not powered off or restarted. This error does not return if the system restarts from hibernation.

This error only shows when the machine is shut down and powered off and restarted or if the machime is restarted from the user login screen.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Aaron,
Did you install any device drivers before the problem started? Instructions for troubleshooting steps that usually result in fixing the serious error message can be found here. If you still get the serious error after doing everything in that article then you may need to use a 3rd party app like RegCleaner to completely remove whatever software is at the root of the problem. Failing that, your only other option will most likely be to format the hard drive and do a clean reinstall of Windows XP.

I posted this problem on the Microsoft News and a fellow by the name of Doug MVP assisted me in finding a remedy. He suggested that I set my computer page file to "0". Reboot, then reset the page file to computer defined settings. Then reboot again.

This solved my problem completely.

The only catch during this procoess was that after I set page file to ), this hosed my Norton Antivirus (basically, it quit responding). I logged in as another user and diabled my Norton. Once I reset my page file size to computer defined, I reactivated Norton and things are back to normal. At last check the computer was allocating 297 meg as the maximum size needed. Needless to say, I should have disabled Norton before trying this excersise.

Thanks for your advice and time.

Aaron,
That's a nice (not to mention time saving) trick. I'll have to try it the next time I run across this problem. Hope it's not one of those "one-hit-wonder" kind of things.
