Fan Still Running While Sleep Mode

Dimension 8400 with Pentium 4/HT, 3.0 ghz.  Everytime I put the system into sleep mode, the fan used to be off while on sleep mode.  This time when I put the system into sleep mode, the fan is still running.   How can I fix the issue?

Did you change anything recently, like add a new piece of hardware or change a driver?

Here are two possibilities:

1. The BIOS setup option for standby has been changed from S3 to S1.

Suspend Mode: The options are S1, a suspend state where the computer is running in a low-power mode, and S3, a standby state where the power is reduced or turned off for most components, however, system memory remains active.

2. A driver is preventing from going into S3. You could check the event log to see if there are any clues.

If you have changed anything, that would be the obvious place to start.

Hi Peter345,

Yes, I have upgraded the BIOS from A02 to A09 and the drivers as well.  All of the drivers I've upgraded through Dell's "Drivers and Downloads".   I will take a look at Setup Setting and will get back to you.  Thanks.

It could be:

1. the BIOS
2. the drivers
3. the CMOS settings

The CMOS settings sometimes get corrupted when updating the BIOS. Try changing to S1 (you want S3) and save. Then change back to S3 and save.

If that doesn't work, I would try going back to the old BIOS.

If that doesn't work, I would try rolling back the drivers one by one.

Hi Peter345,

I am showing as default S3.  Should I change to S1?

Believe it or not, I called Dell's Tech Support with the problem sleep mode while the fans are running.  The tech guy came my house to replace motherboard, and system fans.  I tried myself to put into sleep mode but the fans were still running while sleep mode.  I was disappointed.

Fortunatley, I was figure it out what was wrong and how did it changed.  Somehow, light builb popped up in my head what I did the last few months ago that I changed the setting for the keyboard and mouse for the sleep mode.  So I went into Control Panel and clicked off the boxes for both keyboard and the mouse.  I tried to put sleep mode, guess what the fans are finally off!  Bingo!

I can't believe that Dell offered me to replace motherboard and the fans for nothing, I'm surprised that Dell should know the issue related from the keyboard and the mose for the sleep mode.  I would have kept the old one but I guess it's better than nothing.
