hibernates unexpectedly

as the title states, my machine tends to go into hibernation unexpectedly. i am usually on here surfing the web, checking email, chatting and so forth. the machine will beep once, and go directly to standby/hibernation mode, from there i have to do a hard boot by holding down the power button. green light on power button is steady, not blinking. the keyboard nor mouse will "wake" the system up. the hibernation modes are set to "never". i've contacted dell several times on this, now i am just frustrated with this. i've ran dell diagnostics, all hardware passed. i ran the dell diagnostics memory scan - everything passed. being that the hardware passed, i thought there's an issue with IE. i removed IE7 - issue persisted with IE6. i reinstalled IE7 - issue still persists. i have scanned my machine with symantec - no viruses or infections. i then thought there is an issue with my user account - i created a new user account - issue still persisted.

from here, i'm stumped. i've contacted dell support - they suggest i reinstall the OS. i really don't think it is the OS, as this problem has been happening since the computer was taken out of the box. any insight of what this could be?

i have searched the forums, there are a few old topics where people have had a similar issue, although i didn't see the outcome of what the issue was.

i'm thinking a possible video card or a possible motherboard failure, even though dell diagnostics don't report any errors..

System Information

Inpiron 530 desktop

intel core 2 duo processor E4600

windows xp w/ SP2

2 rb ram

320 gb sata HDD

video card - 128MB ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO

i just check the system event log, hopefully this may be of some help..

these are 2 errors i recieved this evening when the system went into hibernation mode

The driver ati2dvag for the display device \Device\Video0 got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually indicates a problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly. Please check with your hardware device vendor for any driver updates.

i then recieved a system error of

Error code 000000ea, parameter1 89cebb18, parameter2 896279e0, parameter3 89255718, parameter4 00000001.

the 2 errors above seem pretty common throughout my event log.

From the description, it sounds like a motherboard issue.  From the error log, it sounds like a video card driver issue.  Dell wants you to reload so you eliminate that as a potential issue and it requires no work on their part.  It causes a big disruption to the casual user though.

I would try an updated driver on your video card or roll it back if you have the most current driver.  If that doesn't do it, I'm guessing the motherboard is bad.  You can test the theory by calling Dell and TELLING them you reloaded the PC and the same thing is happening.  I think they'll point to the power supply and motherboard.  Probably go power supply first because it is cheaper for them to do that then to send a new mobo.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Similar problems here where my laptop 1720 goes to sleep/hibernate mode unexpectedly while working away actively. Updated BIOS A05 to A07 and also video drivers and Vista Sp1.

I am running Nvidia 8400M-GS and T7250 chipset, 3GB RAM.

I have set the advanced power management to "never" sleep. Any suggestions. I have already phoned the Dell Techs twice and no solutions yet.

are you using a docking station? or the laptop as a standalone? did you run any dell diagnostics tests on it? from a wild guess i'd have to say your motherboard..

No docking staion and performed the diagnostics - nothing.. Finally saw a thread for gpedit.msc>admin templates>power mgmt.

I disabled all sleep/hibernate settings. The screen goes black for less than 2 secs but at least I did not have to wait for HD to stop and turn on power button on again, password etc..

Have to phone Dell again next week to proceed next step.

I, too, have an Inspiron 530, Intel Core 2 Duo 2gig processor, with Radeon HD 2400 PRO 256 mb graphic card, running Windows XP. System 2 months old. Have had same problem with sudden "hibernation." Following suggestions from Dell Support and also from Dell forum, have uninstalled driver and Catalyst Control center and installed latest of each. Sudden hibernation problem has not recured but have been getting intermittent "VPU Recovery" messages saying has adjusted graphic settings. Now can't launch Catalyst without locking up. Now says not compatible with graphic adpater! Dell diagnostics tests show everything OK.  Wondering if it's somehow related to Windows XP. Wonder if anyone having similar issues with Vista.

I too am having this problem, I have a Dimension 5150, with xp running

in my case, it seems that the computer thinks it's a laptop running on battery. I get the following error right before it hibernates (grabbed from the log)

Application popup: Critical Battery : You should change your battery or switch to outlet power immediately to keep from losing your work. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I do have my computer plugged into a UPS, but it seems to be operating fine. I've went into power management and made sure that power controls are set to NEVER turn off.

I do have the "allow hibernate" checked  in the power configuration... I'm afraid to uncheck that, as I don't want the computer to just turn off completely, better to hibernate then to go completely dead.

I'm figuring I'll try that next, but either way that doesnt seem like it would be fixing the actual problem as the power settings tell it to NEVER shut off etc. Also as I said, since it thinks it's running out of battery power, I would assume it will just go dead with that checked off.

figured I'd add my problem to the list

thanks
