Internet Connection error 651
I have a Inspiron 580 that is nearly three years old. Generally it's worked very well throughout that period.
In the last week I have encountered problems connecting to the internet via wired connection to my router.
When I run networks diagnostics I get "Error 651". I can get it to connect eventually by disconnecting and moving the network cable to another port and restarting the PC. This might take 2 or 3 goes.
All the wireless connections work fine so I do not think it is a problem with the router.
Other forum searches for similar problems suggest updating the BIOS. I downloaded the update from the DELL site but when I try to execute it I get the error message below.
Any ideas, it's driving me mad!!
The pasted image did not come out in my original post. It says
XPS MI1330 BIOS Flash A15
An unexpected error occurred while running the Flash application. Please reboot and try again.
Application error return; 0x00000203

Hi nhsdave,
Several sites suggested resetting TCP/IP. See if that works.

"Error 651" error message and an ISDN device does not connect to the network
Error 651: The Modem (or other connecting device) has reported an error.

Hi,
Many thanks for taking the time to respond.
The Microsoft support page says;
"To resolve this issue, uninstall the device driver, and then use Windows Update to obtain the latest driver that is recommended for the ISDN device."
Is the device they are referring to in this instance the modem?
If so, I would do this in Device Manager I presume? Once I do that, how do I get Windows Update to obtain the latest driver?
Sorry if I sound dumb, just don't want to screw it up even further!!

This could be malware or a machine that has norton or mcafee security where the subscription is expired.
Dial up internet is quite painful.

I've got Kaspersky running and no malware reported - full scan every week.
It's not a dial up connection, it's the connection between the PC and the router.
I thought the TC/IP reset had sorted it but the problem is back this morning. So frustrating. I have not been able to not get a connection yet but each time it takes about 30 minutes disconnecting and reconnecting router cables, moving to a different port on the router, closing and restarting the PC.

Have you run the network troubleshooter in Windows 7?
