GT350Mike: When I encounter this problem after someone has been on my computer, it usually turns out to be a document still in que. Try this: go to start, right click the printer icon and click open. When the documents window open, if there is anything pending, click the printer tab, scroll down and click 'cancel all documents'. Then I shut down the printer, disconnect both power and USB from printer for about 10 secs, then reconnect and power up the printer. I have a 73 and this is what works for me. Luck
I have the exact same problem; sometimes it prints, sometimes it doesn't. Almost all the time I get the "Problem communicating with the printer" error. I re-boot, plug and unplug, change cartridges, re-plug, re install drivers, get new "updated drivers" and still I get "Problem communicating with the printer"...!!!!
After looking at some of the other postings about the X83, it seems a great many people are having the same problem and nothing is being done about it by either Dell or Lexmark. I guess we're all Poo Poo-out-of-luck.
In addition to this problem, my printer has ceased printing in color. I've even put a brand new color cartridge in and STILL no color...(If it prints at all)...I just now looked at my color cartridge and there's ink all over the back of it and the ink cradle!!!
I paid for an "All in one RELIABLE printer" and all I got was a $180.00 boat anchor!
If anyone has figured out what's wrong and how to fix it PERMANENTLY, please respond.
In the mean-time, I'm gonna go buy a Hewlet Packard, and maybe a Gateway..."Dude"...
Make sure you have the updated driver for the x83, and when you switch user accounts, you log off first and wait till everything is loaded on to the new users account before trying to use the printer, then if the printer still doesnt work, turn it off and back on. follow these instructions from "OLDYELLER" It helped me out and now my x83 works 90% of the time! Good luck.
This ususally works for the
Lexmark multifunctions on XP. Remove both power and usb from the
printer. Uninstall the driver. Go into the printers folder and make
sure the printer is deleted there. Click file then server
properties. Click the driver tab. Remove any Lexmark from here.
Start, run. Type regedit. Click the plus next to hkey_local
machine. Then next to system, then current control set, then enum,
then usb. Anything that says VID_043D or VID_0000 can be deleted.
You may have to right click and hit permissions on them, give
yourself full control, then delete them. Also under the usb print
folder there may be a LexmarkLexmark folder. Delete it. Now restart
the computer, install from the latest download and do NOT connect
the printer until you are told to by the install. This is the big
mistake that happens, if you do something gets messed up and you
Since I purchased this Dimension 4400 and the Lexmark x83, I have been having the same problem as most of you without any real solution. Yes, I fixed the problem to a 90% workable rate, but it was not fixed. As for a couple of days now, it seems to work fine. I hope its permanent. Heres how I did it...
Lexmark has a new driver and a new uninstaller program for the x83. Go to the lexmark.com website, then I went to the xp compatible drivers. then I chose the x83. This is a new driver they put out as of Nov 8 2002. Read the instructions for downloading the driver. You will notice there is a link for downloading the "Clean Remove Program" which will completely remove the old driver "which is also part of the problem". Follow the instructions and download both the uninstaller and the driver to your desktop. It took me a couple of hrs. Double click the LXKX83CLEAN and follow the instructions. You will then be prompted to restart. Do so. After you log on then double click on the CJXP83LE driver program. Follow the instructions and remember! Dont connect the usb cable to the computer until it tells you to and never connect it to the back usb ports on any Dell system. Good Luck!
Anyone have the original CD's that came with the X83? We had ours stolen with a laptop. We've got the Driver downloaded and installed, but would sure like the OCR application for the scanner running again. Thanks.

Thanks for the info. In the past, I have cleared the "q" and I still had the problem. Hopefully someone will come up with a software solution.
Thanks again for your reply!
