Memory Error Messages

Good Afternoon:

My system was recently infected with the W32/MTX Virus. I ran my virus scan program and it found 74 infected files, which were either restored and/or deleted. I am now receiving a memory error message "err 2" and "Memory Error". This error message does not appear to be causing any interferences with running programs, it just pops up suddenly? Please help.

Thank you,

Renee

Renee: You didn't mention what operating system you have but if it's Win98 or 98SE I suggest you run the System File Checker (Start > Run then type in SFC then OK. When the window comes up check the top radio button next to 'Scan for Altered Files'. If it comes back and says certain System files are corrupt or missing make a note of the file name and where it belongs (C:\Windows, for example) you can extract fresh copies from your Win98 CD using the bottom radio button. If that doesn't help then post back with the first two or three lines of the error message you're getting. Click on the Details button when the error window pops up and copy then paste into a post.....

Bob:

This message does not provide me with details, it is a static image stating "err 2" and an OK click button? This is driving me crazy. I have deleted the swap file in dos mode and defragmented the hard drive, all was well until I rebooted. The swap file jumped up to 114,688 and growing. Could there be something running in the background causing this problem?

Thank you for your help.

Renee: Sorry for the late response. Don't worry about the swap file size, it fluctuates (with some latency) based on what you have running at the time. You can check out your virtual memory settings by right clicking on 'My Computer' then 'Properties' then the 'Performance' Tab. When that window comes up click on the 'Virtual Memory' button. The top button should be highlighted "Let Windows Manage my Virtual Memory Settings".

On the err 2 problem I don't have a clue. The virus obviously effected something but without more information I'm at a loss. I've looked every place I can think to look and have come up completely empty. Maybe you should give Dell Tech a call on this one. Sorry.

Thanks Bob for your reply and help. I like your quote below your icon, I have two horses which I ride in the local barrel racing events.

Take care,

Renee
