Sounds like the DATECH Fan....... look in the back of the tower and see if you see the words datech.... if so call CS and tell them you want it replaced. Mine could be heard in the hallway. The more stuff that was loaded up to be used, the more that old fan would whirrr and whine.......And I am surprised they are still shipping them with the darn things. sheeesh.

I am interested you said there is a fan for the power supply?. well my DATECH is sitting in the shroud that is sitting right over the cpu which has a heat sink in it. I do not recall seeing any other fan in here....... And I am the one having these werid shut off problems out of the blue.. Plus a new power supply is supposed to be installed.
When the tech comes I GUESS i AM GOING TO ASK HIM TO SORT OF SHOW ME AROUND THE INSIDE OF THIS SUCKER.

Hi! I just had my DATECH fan replaced with an NMB on my 8200
and it is a quiet as a mouse. It's great! All I did was call Dell Tech Support, told them I was tired of listening to this lawn mower in my PC, and asked them to send a non-DATECH CPU fan. It was sent to a technician within 2 days of my complaint and the problem is resolved! ...no more mowing the lawn (during the winter!). Hope this helps.
I have always had a very noisy Datech chip fan (at times it sounds like a 747 taking off) - but thought it was typical - and lived with it.
As just out of warrenty now I have tried taking the assembly to most obvious places locally - they only do a standard 92 mm fan which is 12V abt 0.15 A but see that the Datech unit as fitted is 0.7 A. Does anybody know if a standard 0.15A fan is OK wrt air flow please?
Tried raising this with Dell but no human response as at this date. Their AI reply however was quite useful, at least in that it pointed me to this forum and I thus found out this is a common problem. Wish I had known before.
I called dell asked them for NMB Fan they said they don't have it for my dimension 4600 . so if any one can give me the NMB item code or number would be greate. They reufuse to give me a different brand of cpu fan. I Just got a cpu fan replace by datech again. still making too much noise. I don't know whey the dell tech support said they only have datech fan for dimension 4600..

I had the fan replaced with a NMB. I had the power supply replaced and the video card.
I still am getting a whirring, humming noise. I hear it out of the room 15 feet away.
Help. What do I do? It's driving us crazy.

You're going to have to figure out exactly which component is making the noise. Use this article as a guide.
