SDRAM Upgrade Problem, Window (ME)

I have a Dell Dimension L800r, Pentium III processor at 800MHZ. My operation system is Windows Millennium Edition. The manual says I can upgrade to 512MB DIMM SDRAM. So, I've installed 320MB SDRAM because I thought it'll be fast enought to play pc games. I checked the system file and it says that the physical memory is 318MB. But, the computer is only using 123MB. What's going on? I have two slots in the hard drive for ram. First slot=64MB. Second slot=256MB. These slots total=320MB SDRAM. But, the computer is only using 123MB of physical memory!!!! How can I remedy this problem????

Speedqueen,

Thank you for using the Dell | Talk forum.

You have not made it clear where you are getting your memory
information from. Right click on (My Computer), then click properties.
This should give you a read out of your total memory.
If it states you have 318MB or 320MB of ram, then the system is recognizing the
memory. If you have less then what you should have, then Windows is having
a problem or the hardware is not working properly.
Try the following to solve the problem.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
**Update your bios**

You can download the latest bios file from the
following link: here.
Once you have downloaded the file, put a blank formatted disk in the system.
Double click the file, and follow the prompts to create the bios upgrade disk.
Once the disk is created, leave it in the system and reboot the system.
The Bios upgrade will occur as the system boots up, and reads the disk.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
**After upgrading your bios, reset the bios defaults.**

1.Entering System Setup Program

Turn on (or restart) your system.
When the blue Dell logo appears, press (Delete Key).
If you wait too long and the operating system begins to load into memory, let the system complete the load operation. Then shut down the system and try again
When you enter Bios, you will get a window that reads:
Dell Dimension Lxxxx Setup:

**Clearing NVRAM:

To clear NVRAM for all devices and restart the system, perform the following steps:
Enter the system setup program.
Press the right-arrow key to move to the Advanced menu.
Press the down-arrow key to highlight the Boot Configuration submenu, and press (Enter).
Press the down-arrow key to highlight Reset Config Data. Then press the (Enter) key, and change the setting to Yes.
When that is done, press (F10) to exit the program and restart the system.
You will want to choose (YES) to "Save Changes and Exit."

**Resetting the Defaults in BIOS:
Enter the System Setup Program.
Press (F9), highlight (Yes) to (Reset Default Configuration)
Press (F10) to (Save Changes and Exit)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If the above steps do not help, the test the memory in another system.
If you have another system with the same type of memory, try the memory from that system.
If the system still does not recognize the memory, you may need to
reinstall Windows.

What that means is that the OS/SYSTEM are currently using 123MB of the total memory you have. The rest is free to be used by other applications, etc.

Phillip
