XPS One 2710 Touch screen (touch) problem

I have two new Dell XPS One 2710 Touch computers  running Win 8 that I am having touch screen problems with. The intermittent problem occurs on both computers. When I swipe from right to left on Start to bring up the Charm Bar, it will not appear. However, the mouse pointer does follow my finger movement. I cannot swipe from the bottom of the screen to bring up the "all Apps" bar either. Also, I cannot swipe to scroll in apps such as Bing or AOL Live. I have done a Refresh and a full Windows 8 reinstall on both computers and the problem is still present.

I think the problem is either driver or BIOS related but cannot locate any updates at Dell support that I trust to fix the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would appreciate the help.

pamntoms,

* Type touch in the search field on the Search Charm and select Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input
* Click Calibrate to launch the calibration tool
* Touch the screen to confirm the input supports touch
* Press Enter to continue with the calibration tool
* Tap the Cross Hair (+) with your finger each time it appears on the screen to calibrate the touchscreen
* Follow the on screen instruction and save the calibration data to complete touchscreen calibration
* Click Yes to save the calibration data

* The search results for touch will also show options like Pen and Touch, change touch input settings and change multi-touch gesture settings. Check those for other adjustment options

Thanks Chris but I have already tried that (Calibration) on one computer without any improvement. I decided to try it again and I could not even register a touch on that screen. Sometimes if I restart the computer all touch works fine, other times I can not access my Charm Bar or scroll in apps using touch gestures. Using my mouse, all works just fine.

I bought two new Dell XPS One 2710 with Win 8 this last November. One for the wife, one for me. Both have the same problems. I have called Dell tech support three times with this issue without a fix. I did a Refresh on both computers and then did a full restore on both. At one point, the wife's tiles on Metro stopped working. Another time, out of the blue, the Metro Start page began to crash and then reopen then crash again. Over and over. I restarted her PC and that problem has not returned.

I still believe we have an errant driver problem or need a BIOS update. However, the Dell support app that came with both PCs, at one point, began telling us that she needed to download and install a critical BIOS update. We did that and her computer would not boot. That is when I did a full reinstall of Win 8 on her Dell. Another time, I installed an Intel driver update for my video card from Windows Update and my computer failed to boot. So, I did a full reinstall on my computer.

All our problems are touch screen related. Everything else with both computers works fine. I have posted on Microsoft's community forum and a Microsoft MVP suggested that my problem is driver related. I agree but I find no updated drivers available on the Dell support page for my XPS running Win8.

Any help I might get would be much appreciated!

I've had the same issue with two Dell XPS 2710 PC's now.  I've been trying to work with the Help Desk for over a month now, with no success.  I keep getting the "we'll call you back after we talk to the Dev teams..."

I've just discovered the same problem with mine.  Everything works fine, except I can't get the charm bar using either touch, or the mouse.  The Device Manager doesn't include the touch screen device in the list of 'Mice and other pointing devices'.  What's the next step, I wonder?

Hi Tom,

I posted a message earlier saying that I have the same problem, but I've now fixed it.  I scouted around the forums and found something similar that users of another model of touch screen computer had posted.  The first part of a response posted by Ravi Chandra (DELL-Ravi Ch) who works for Dell, did the trick for us, and it's really simple.

1. Switch off the computer.

2. Disconnect the power cable from the wall. [and any peripherals]

3. Press and hold down the power button for 15 seconds.

4. Then connect back all the peripherals and check if the touch screen is working.

I held the power button down for more like 20 seconds, but it worked.

Ravi did go on to describe an alternative route if the above doesn't work.  It involves opening the 'Device Manager' and checking 'mice and other pointing devices', and I tried the Device Manager first, but it didn't work.  Steps 1 - 4 did work, though.  I should have tried that part first, but it seemed too simple.  :emotion-2:

Let me know if you get it working.

Pauline.

I have the same intermittent touchscreen problem with a Dell XPS One 2710 Touch delivered last December.

Dell Technical Support updated the BIOS to A09, updated the touchscreen driver, and recalibrated the touchscreen in January.  The problem persists, but is temporarily corrected by a simple Restart.

I understand that Dell subsequently released BIOS A10 in late January.  Does anyone know if this BIOS update solves the problem?

I've had the XPS One 27 for about a month.  The touch swiping sometimes stops working for the right-to-left or left-to-right, but works on swiping up and down.  Temporary, sometimes returns later in the day, most definitely after restarting.  It's happened 3 times maybe since purchase.

Today a new problem...it will not recognize a drag to scroll the screen by touch (of course, in all cases, the mouse still works), now the drag turns into highlighting (which usually requires a little tap first).  Also will not let me pull or pinch to resize content.  I'm about to turn off and restart to see if resolves.

This is weird!  Microsoft store suggested I take it back for exchange...but that's a drag to lose a computer while they transfer everything (and then, I worry about transferring correctly)?

replying to self...restarting DOES resolve the problem...and also happened to coincide with a Windows Update installing.  Don't believe that was true in past instances.  Will post here again if problem recurs in a few days.

I wonder if most of us use the mouse almost exclusively, and so would not notice the problem.

replying to self, must be the only one with this issue?  Worked fine since last posting (3/27) until today, when swiping left and right failed.  Restart fixes it.  There was no Windows Update interfering, just random?

I have exactly the same problem.  Would it not be as easy to find the executable that runs for this feature, end it in task manager and restart.

Unfortunately I don't know what service this is in the task manager.

For me, the problem has been so occasional, and I LOVE the machine otherwise!  Would not want to trade if for something else, hope swasser gets rid of the shakes!

Just got the 2710 touch and have a different problem. the screen image shakes, after 2 hours with tech they decided to replace the unit seems its a touch screen problem. Just hoping after reading your stories I don't get one that has the stated problems you all are having. Just wondering if I should just return it, Any thoughts

same problem here. Restarting solves the problem most of the times. I seem to have a (similar) problem with the soundcard, in which I seem to be getting bad sound quality every now and then (feels like the sample rate of the sound has been halved). Restarting works fine in this case as well.

I just bought a Dell XPS One 2710 and noticed that the first time it was powered on that the screen started shaking.  After a couple of minutes, I rebooted and was able to proceed through the Windows 8 initial setup procedure.  Everything appeared to work fine for a short while but soon noticed that the touch screen stopped responding to touch.  The feedback dots that appear at the place where the screen is touched seemed to be flickering along a vertical line just to the left of the center of the screen from top to bottom.  Also, I noticed that the screen sometimes appeared to be "zooming" in and out sporadically (at least with Internet Explorer running).  I have installed all the latest drivers and updated the BIOS and still the problem persists.  The only solution is to reboot, and that is only a temporary mend until it decides to randomly lash out again.  Another thing I've noticed is that occasionally there is a "dead" vertical strip near the center of the screen that will not register touch input.  I can run a draw/paint program and start painting a line from left to right and the "dead" vertical strip will not paint within that region.  But then, after a reboot, it works fine and a line can be painted within that same previously "dead" region.  This seems to be a software/driver problem but I'm not certain.  There seems to be lots of others having problems with these touch screens and I hope that the issue gets resolved soon.
