I agree..

I also think regardless of whether points were awarded or not, the thread be closed (by default) say after 1 week. Some people reply to a dead thread and ask questions such as 'I too have the same problem..please help' instead of opening a new one.

Totally agree. Though I don't usually answer too many questions (I have too many of my own problems to take care of), but I have seen this many times where users don't come back on the suggestions that others post. And there are so many threads that are restarted by someone facing the same issue.

I think there should be a way to contact users through this forum, not by revealing their contact information, but internally, so that users can try to contact the person responsible for a similar post earlier. This way his/her problem will get solved quickly.

Also I have always felt that there should be some kind of a "feature submission" facility so that those feature requests that are solved by users out there (and are still open in Documentum's report) can be submitted to documentum (unsupported), so that they can be reused by others

Request comments,
Nikhil.

Well Johnny, yes I agree that we are pulled back from one task and hence might want to reference that thread at a later time.

Even though threads are closed, they can be referenced at a later time. Which means you can post a new thread and reference the closed thread in the new one.
I think the CLOSING feature already exists in this forum. A thread becomes inactive for a while, for e.g. http://forums.documentum.com/jive3/thread.jspa?threadID=17413&tstart=330

My idea behind starting this thread is to stress the importance on feedback. I am not sure how the need for Feedback can be enforced, Closing the thread was just an idea.
A better idea would be great! Johnny, being the leader of this forum your comments become important :)

P.S. From my observation (I might be wrong),situtation of re-referencing the thread by the same thread starter if very rare. Its usually piggybacking users who re-start it.

Although I agree with Ajay about some users not having good forum etiquette, I dont necessary support the idea of closing threads. We all have been in situations where we started one task and get pulled away to work on another. Automatically closing a thread, or giving other users the ability to close a thread, is too "police-like". This could result in users re-posting their original thread and we know how we feel about crossposting and reposting.

Instead, I would like a way to "personally tag" users that I feel dont deserve my attention. This "tag" would not be exposed to the forum, so there's no issue about character defamation. It would be similar to "block sender" email feature.

As for Anand's comments about users piggybacking on other users thread, sometimes you just need to remind them to start a new thread. I believe this is only something that new users do.

I like Nikhil "feature submission" forum. There are a lot of posts out on the forum that are workarounds to bugs (lack of features).

How about an option on the menu for a thread: Feedback from original poster requested --if this is within the capabilities of the Jive software. That flag could generate an email to the poster.
Sounds good! And an email notification to the user requesting update, if ALL the following conditions are satisfied: (ANDing the following statements)
1. User has not awarded any points (correct or helpful)
2. User has not updated/posted the thread since 2 days
3. The last post in the thread is not by the thread starter

What do you guys think of the above? This way the thread starter is at least aware that he has to provide feedback. Dianna, could you please help us with this?

I sympathize with Ajay's concern -- you spend time figuring out someone's problem, and they don't get back and say whether it worked or not. A flag like Johnny suggests would help the people who write supporting answers, like Ajay and Johnny, but they won't help the users who find the problem similar to their own and wonder whether the posted solution works or not.

I support the idea of email notification. This is a good compromise instead of closing the thread in its entirety.

You all bring up very good points.

As a forum user good etiquette is that you should close out your thread at the very least by awarding points, but it should also involve a thank you and possibly what you did to resolve the problem/question. Unfortunately, we can't force users to do this.

We have been discussing possibilities to increase this or to at least reflect the usefulness of the answers if not by the OP then by other posters.

Some of our ideas are:

1) Send an email to the OP after a certain period of inactivity on the thread if no points have been awarded.

2) Allow the moderators to award points.

3) Allow other users to award "I found this useful." points.

4) Automatically lock a thread after a certain period of inactivity on the thread to help reduce the "I'm having this problem too" posts.

5) Allow private messaging so that users can privately ping OP to award points.

We are working on an upgrade to the forums, and with the upgrade we are wanting to include many of the feature enhancements that we have been collecting from you since our original go live. This is one such enhancement that we brought up and is being discussed as to how to address it. We have not yet reached a decision as to the best approach, but your opinions are most definitely taken into consideration.

I too support the notification suggestion, and also like Johnny said, it would be really great if we could find such users who are not having good forum etiquette.

Adding a thank you is a good thing to do. However it may be best if they only go to the intended recipient, since there are already plenty of posts to keep track of without having to read all those too.

Dianna,
Sorry for this delay in getting back to you and thank you for your reply. Here are my answers to your tips

1) Send an email to the OP after a certain period of inactivity on the thread if no points have been awarded.
Strongly agree.

2) Allow the moderators to award points.
Neutral.

3) Allow other users to award "I found this useful." points.
Neutral

4) Automatically lock a thread after a certain period of inactivity on the thread to help reduce the "I'm having this problem too" posts.
Strongly agree!

5) Allow private messaging so that users can privately ping OP to award points.
Strongly agree

P.S If Masters, Experts or users interested give a feedback, it would be great. Thanks!
