Does LUN has limitation ?

hi,buddy,

Does LUN map from Symmetrix has limitation?  For example, the size of each LUN and the number of LUN.

maximum device size on VMAX is 240G, you can create Meta Device that can combine 255 x 240G devices so that would be the maximum host addressable device size.

very thanks for replay. so  255 is the max number about LUN on Symmetrix ? Is it coincidence that my LUN size is same as hyper volume size ?  What LUN size is suit for OLTP ?

before VMAX - you have hypers that comprise your symdev, symdev is what you actually present to the host. On Symmetrix DMX3/4, maximum symdev size was 64G but you could combine multiple symdev into meta LUN (255 x 64G).

On VMAX - if you are using virtual provisioning, there are no hypers per say, you still have symdevs, maximum size 240G and on you can combine them into meta LUN ( 255 x 240G).

When you think about OLTP you think about performance first, capacity last. EMC recommendation is not to exceed 32-way meta ( 32 x 240G)

in my shop we are running Oracle 11g on top of RedHat 5.6. We are using Oracle ASM so from VMAX we present 34g devices and DBA use those devices and add them to ASM disk groups in Oracle.
