Driving good behavior within Forums
Hi everyone,
I wanted to summarize some of the actions we at EMC are researching to help drive the good behavior you've been discussing in some of the other threads.
1) Make user's Name read-only, and populate it with name from Powerlink
2) Post Guidelines in an Announcement within each Forum
3) Bring back Top 10 Users per Forum
Can you think of some other ideas I missed, apart from forcing users to reveal their names, or some other suggestions that may be easy or quick to implement that will help new users be productive, responsive and responsible?
Thanks,
Erich

I mentioned 3) as an example yesterday
You do already have a long list of enhancements requests, and if we concentrate
on the motivation points actually may have, I would pick from your list
Open and recorded after Oct-22-2006 move to Powerlink
- Nov-07-2006 - prakashtra - Top 100 users page (see http://forums.emc.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=44206)
Open and recorded after Apr-29-2006 upgrade
- May-06-2006 - hcrvelin - show user posts per day average (see http://forums.emc.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=35630&tstart=0)
Open and recorded prior to Apr-29-2006 upgrade
- Feb-26-2004 - Moderators award points
- Jul-31-2003 - User's Ranking relative to Top 10
- Jul-16-2004 - Useful flag
- Jan-08-2004 - Receive E-Mail notifications when points are awarded
- May-28-2004 - Top 20 Users
- Jun-13-2005 - User's should be able to reward points on other's answers

Our guidelines don't go into all of this.
Is it time we set up a forum user group to work on establishing these guidelines?

You're right, those enhancements would help with the visibility of what's going on among users. But we need to find ways to improve community behaviour using the platform as it is, since any change takes time - in another place I'll start providing a planned and prioritised list of changes and estimated timings.
I will work on finding more EMC forum moderators, and having them make themselves visible and available within their forums; this will also take some time!
Meanwhile don't hesitate to contact me directly if you have detected (or even just think that you've detected) any behaviours that might be harmful to the community as a whole, like:
- deliberate generation of points - this was quickly and nicely dealt with by everyone
- unreasonably high numbers of questions from an individual without a balancing level of answers from them, possibly pointing to someone using the forum/forum community to do what should be their own work
- abusive or unpleasant behaviour of any kind
