Powerlink Performance and Availability

Very often, when I use Powerlink to perform a search, two bad things happen:

1. It takes approximately THREE minutes to return a result. That's right, three whole minutes. Every other website is lightning fast, so I know it's not my network connection.

2. When it finally does return, I get the message "EMC Knowledgebase is not available at this time. Please check back later.".

This happens to me all the time! Why does it take three minutes to tell me the Knowledgebase is unavailable? It's not like this is a one time thing - it seems to happen most of the time. What gives?

Hi Brian,

3 minutes search is not something I have seen so far. Can you give an example of such search? (eg. what are you looking for in search string and how does your filter mask look like?)

As for "...not available" message, it is something I can see more often than one would expect, but in majority of cases I find it to be "bogus" where at bottom I find results nevertheless (I say "bogus" because this can be seen when one of selected databases or machines is down so you don't get full search result and failure of one machine triggers this error. Recently there was also another explanation of this error and cause was identified - you wish to search through past threads).

We are working to resolve the "EMC Knowledgebase is Un-available" like errors you've been experiencing. We've found the failure most often occurs when the Service Requests result set is delayed. I've suggested, and a several users have tried, a work-around where they "de-select" Service Requests from their search all sources. This has improved the experience for these users..

We've also posted user tips at; Home » EMC Support Forums » General » Powerlink » Announcement.

Several enhancements/fixes have been identified, with the first of these in the development/test cycle now. I'm reluctant to publish target dates until all of our function, regression and performance testing is complete.

Well, the three minute delay is almost always related to the "not available" error message. If I have to wait longer than a minute for the search to return, I'm almost guaranteed to get the "not available" message.

I don't think it's a "bogus" message - I'm almost positive that there were no results, even if I scroll down - but to be honest I'll have to double check.

Just before I wrote my original post, I ran a Quick Search for "eroom services" - it took several minutes and I got the "not available" message. But a couple minutes ago I did the same search, and it took about 45 seconds and no errors (I still think 45 seconds is a long wait for a search).

I would say this "not available" thing happens once per day, or maybe every other day. But it's frequent enough to be very frustrating.
