It seems to me that Vplex is a lot like SVC from IBM and also resembles EMC's Invista.
What I haven't seen yet, is exactly what services you can get from Vplex. Does it offer Snapshot, migrating of LUN's between different vendor arrays, mirroring of LUN between different vendor arrays? Does it offer thin provisioning? What does it have that SVC and Invista don't have?
I don’t think Vplex actually interacts with the array, it just uses the storage and presents it to the host. I think the array just sees Vplex as another host.
This makes me wonder, wouldn’t Brocade or another SAN switch manufacturer also be in the position to offer such a product? They already have a product (SAN Switch) which sits between the host and the array(s), so why not add more functionality to it.
My understanding of VPLEX is that it makes the storage arrays on different sites look like one unified storage and when there is a write on the host it is sent to storage on both sites..I am starting a new project with NS480 and VPLEX..Also its integration with VMware is very interesting and I hope to learn more about this during this project...:-)

I just had a look at the "VPLEX Simple Support Matrix!
Wow, what a document! This is the kind of Support Matrix I like.
This can be handled, this is the way all ESM should look like.
E-Lab Navigator and current ESM is a monster.
