Windows 10 - Recovery - System-Reset failed - Workaround: add most recent drivers to WinRE
Some Windows 10 builds do not support the most recent HW models / most recent chipsets, network adapter, SATA because of missing drivers in WinPE / WinRE
If you try to reset a unit to the initial OOBE / AutoPilot-Config then you may see only a screen like this
Prepare your "System-Reset" test using a DELL ImageAsist image
######################################
- Download ISO via MS MediaCreationTool Windows 10 - e.g. 20H2 / 21H1
- Installation on a virtual machine – no customizations
- Use Dell ImageAssist => Capture.WIM
- Dell ImageAssist USB key – restore image on a very recent hardware model
- Run OOBE - all OKAY
Try to initiate a "System Reset" ( either MS-Intune or "ReAgentc.Exe /BootToRE")
- Reboot
- "System Reset" failed - hard disk not found
- Same failure if system reset is initiated by Intune
- Same failure if system is installed without any network connectivity ( no Cloud, no Intune, no domain)
Workaround:
before you apply the Captured.WIM to any physical unit modify the Captured.WIM
1) Download most recent WinPE10-DRV-CAB ( www.dell.com/FamilyPacks)
2) extract subfolder x64 of WinPE10-DRV-CAB
3) mount Captured.WIM
4) Mount WinRE.WIM (part of captured.WIM): \Windows\System32\Recovery\WinRE.WIM)
5) Inject WinPE10-DRV to WinRE.WIM
Dism /Image:C:\WinREMount /Add-Driver /Driver: /forceunsigned /recurse
6) Unmount WinRE.WIM
7) Unmount Capture.WIM
Apply DELL ImageAssist Capture.WIM to physical unit, finally test System-Reset
Bug-FIX - when unit is already delivered
a) Disable WindowsRE - ReAgentC.exe /Disable
b) Mount C\Windows\System32\Recovery\WinRE.WIM
c) Inject WinPE10-DRV (only x64) to WinRE.WIM - described above
d) unmount WinRE
e) Enable WindowsRE - ReAgentC.exe /Enable
f) Test "System Reset"
