Hard Drive is dead. Time for a new one.  This system is OVER 12 years old.

Always include version of Windows in your posts.

Reboot and immediately press F2 to open BIOS setup. Make sure these are the current BIOS setting or change to these settings:

Date/Time: Set to current date/time

Drives 0 - 5: Make sure your boot drive is correctly recognized on SATA0 port*

SATA Mode: (aka: SATA Operation, or Drive Controller):  RAID AutoDetect/AHCI

Boot Sequence: Boot drive that's connected to SATA0, as identified above, should be first on the boot list

Be sure to save the changes before exiting BIOS setup.

*If boot hard drive is not recognized on SATA0 port, power off, unplug and open case. Check power connection and data cable connections at both ends to the boot drive. Then go into BIOS setup again and see if the drive is recognized now. If not, then the drive may have died, as speedstep suggested.

(I'm typing this on my Dimension 8400)
