G5 5000, GPU capabilities
Hi, I know this has been discussed but I was hoping that someone has had some success before I destroy this machine. So, I have the config with the 1660 Ti. It’s ok, but the 3060 Ti beats it as do any of the RTX cards. I smell an upgrade, but don’t know what I can do? Dell sells this system with OEM RTX 2060, 2060s, 2070, and 3070. When I called support to ask which cards I can upgraded to they said I can’t. Now, that’s because they sell as I said with these RTX cards. Long story short, has anyone upgraded to anything not from Dell?

many users have reported running RTX2060, 2060S, 2070 in G5 5000. see user benchmark for this model.

So, Dell customer service on numerous occasions told me I could not upgrade the gpu from the GTX 1660 Ti. After numerous complaints and non-stop questions, they conceded that I could indeed, but they are advised not to recommend it. Needless to say, I wanted the latest gpu that would work. The psu in this system has an 8 pin and a six pin pcie power connector. I also did not want to remove the hdd cage in the front. So, EVGA 3060 Ti XC was the winner. I didn't need to undervolt, and I run it overclocked all the time. Been problem free for 3 months. So, yes, you can definitely upgrade. This card was suggested to be used with a 600w psu, but 500 handles it just fine. GPU manufacturers overestimate usage.

Believe it or not, I didn't have to disable Secure Boot. New GPUs are already uefi ready

Just got my G5 with 3060ti last week, 10700f&500w, so far so good. so I think you can definitely upgrade your video card.

@OmgwtfShawn Is secureboot still enabled in your BIOS? If you clear CMOS will it still boot from the new card? (note: don't do this if you don't still have the OEM card or you might be boned lol)
I'd be super interested to know as I would love a 3060Ti and would sell my 2060 to offset the cost (if they ever get back in stock anywhere). But if I ever lost CMOS power I'd be out of luck.

Secure Boot is about Certificate in bios from Dell or Microsoft.
UEFI boot loader is on the storage aka its a partition
Secure Boot Certificates are in the BIOS and Chipset and NVROM. The certificates cover software, drivers, bios, as well as requiring WHQL certification.
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/design/device-experiences/oem-secure-boot
Before the PC is deployed, you as the OEM store the Secure Boot databases on the PC. This includes the signature database (db), revoked signatures database (dbx), and Key Enrollment Key database (KEK). These databases are stored on the firmware nonvolatile RAM (NV-RAM) at manufacturing time.

Great job! Regarding power. My 500W PSU is totally capable of running my i9 10900 + RTX3080 in any games I threw at them. The GPU goes up to 220W and the CPU usually keeps under 100W even in the most CPU-heavy games I have (flight simulators). I don't get any power or current throttling (nor any thermal throttling now that I've upgraded the cooling). On this one, I got to give Dell props. They managed to squeeze as much power as possible out of a very efficient PSU. On paper, if I were to constantly run the CPU at max power (I've seen it spike as high as 210W in CPU stress tests), plus the GPU at its max power of 220W, then yeah, I'd have an issue and could probably use a 650-700W PSU. But in reality, I've never had a game demand that much CPU power. And apps that do (e.g. Blender), don't load the GPU that much, so they balance each other out.

Very encouraging to see you were able to drop new upgrades right in. Was there any sizing issues with the Evga 3060 Ti Xc? Did you have to measure spacing first to be sure it would fit? The G5 has a small case and I haven't taken the time to measure the space inside that I have to work with.
