Having problems after installing CPU in 3847

I installed an i5-4690k into my 3847 recently replacing the Pentium G3240 that was in it previously.

I updated and reset the bios to default and reinstalled Windows. When I boot to the bios everything seems fine and the new CPU is recognized but after logging into windows the system will hard freeze requiring me to force restart. It does not do this if I log into windows through safe mode?

Does anyone have advice? Is this CPU even supported on the 088dt1 motherboard?

Do you think that could be my problem? I wouldn’t think the extra 30w tdp would matter without a GPU as well. Thanks for your response.

Always mention the version of Windows in your posts!

Did you update BIOS before or after you installed the new CPU?

Validated CPUs for this motherboard appear to be:

  • M6F2X Haswell i7-4770 (3.40GHz, 86W, LGA)
  • RXHF8 Haswell i5-4670 (3.40GHz, 86W, 4C)
  • KR2TG Haswell i5-4570 (3.20GHz, 86W, 4C, LGA)
  • F3VXR Haswell i5-4440 (3.10GHz, 95W, L, C0)
  • P5FJT Haswell i3-4130 (3.40GHz, 65W, L)
  • 5RY21 Pentium G3220 (3.10GHz, 65W)
  • HKGVH Pentium G1820 (2.70GHz, 65W)

That doesn't mean others won't work, but Dell hasn't tested them.

If it's ok when you boot in Safe Mode, something loading during normal boot may be causing the problem.

Did you install all the drivers for your system from Dell's Support page? Be sure to select the correct version of Windows before downloading any drivers. Start by installing the Intel chipset and management engine drivers. Then reboot and install the others needed for your specific hardware, eg drivers for Intel Graphics, for any add-in video card, network adapter(s) etc...

You can always disable things on the Startup tab in Windows, one or a few at a time to see if you can pin down the one that's causing the freezes. If you disable your antiviral app to test that one, make sure the PC doesn't connect to the internet while it's disabled so you don't get a hack attack. And be sure to re-enable the antiviral app as soon as you rule it out.

I'd try disabling apps on the Startup tab in Task Manager in Win 10 first.

But it's still possible your new CPU isn't fully compatible...

It is Windows 10 64bit. I updated to A11 before installing the cpu. After windows installed it did run the updater that installed many drivers including intel system files and the video driver for HD 4600.

Should I try to uninstall them?

Well unfortunately disabling startup programs had no effect on the freezing.

Looking into the event viewer shows several (hundreds) DCOM errors 1084 and 10016.
