Weird audio issue

So I have had a weird what I presume glitch with my PC's audio for like 2 years and I think its finally time I found some answers. Basically when I do not have loudness equalization on, music and youtube are loud and the audio is perfect. However any video game, the sound is almost nonexistent. I can have the volume at 100 and still barely be able to hear the game. However, when I turn loudness equalization on, the sound for games is back to normal. But it obviously makes everything else quieter. I feel like I should not need to turn loudness equalization on to be able to play games with normal audio. Does anyone know why this is happening, and if there is a way to fix it?

Sorry if this is not the right place to put this, but I feel like it could be a pc issue.

Pc- Inspiron 5680

Device name-DESKTOP-9ST8P6S

Operating system-Windows 10

Headset being used-Hyperx cloud 2 (problem occurs no matter how my headset is connected to my pc)

The Hyper X headset is a USB connected type, from what I find.  That says its not the Realtek (PC) audio that is causing this as a USB unit takes digital data and converts it to analog audio internal in the device (does not use the Realtek).  The problem is before the headset, and I assume regular PC speaker audio with games.  As "regular" PC audio appears to work OK that also tends to eliminate the audio system as the problem.

Some games generate MIDI audio rather than wav or MP3 audio.  The different audio source could be one possibility and maybe a better MIDI synth is needed or the MIDI synth needs volume level adjustment.  Many games also have their own audio levels adjustments and another place to look.

Some other areas to look at.  Input device (used to be called Recording Device) should be set to "Stereo Mix". In that same Panel is an option for "Advnced Sound Options".  In that panel if not already set, set the "Apps' sound at 100.  See my two screenshots.

Thank you so much it has been fixed but the reasoning behind how it has been fixed it very strange. The fix was to go to the app volume page and switch all the apps output to my Headset instead of default. However my headset is set to default device, and there was still a lower noise coming through them before I even did this. So I do not really understand how that would be the fix but it was, so thank you for showing me that page. However youtube/twitch is still quiet even after doing this without equalization on, maybe its normal and I am just not used to it.

So yeah I do not know if you know what further more could be causing this because I found the fix for games, but as I watched more videos I realized I'm having the same issue still. No idea now what the problem could be since it was already fixed for games. If you have any ideas I'm open to them, thanks.

Normally, Speakers (Realtek) is set as the output device and Stereo Mix as Input device.  When you plug in headset it may or may not switch to headset as output device.  Stereo Mix as Input device and any input should be heard, and at the set volume level.

The headset you have, from what I find, is USB and as previously noted it doesn't use the PC audio (Realtek) for output as it has its own built in sound card and amplifier.   I would get a standard PC speaker system and connect that and set the Speakers (Realtek) as the output device and see if all works OK.  Get a "working base" and then go from there.  You may be chasing the wrong problem and it may lie in the headset.  I've seen problems over the years from USB headsets.

OK, we are back too one audio works OK and one does not unless a PC setting is changed.

Next question are you only using Dell provided drivers?  I've seen sound problems posted on this forum and on the tenforums.com of Dell's not working right and the problems were non Dell drivers.

Before I ever go on here I made sure to have tried with both other headsets and speakers. I have connected Logitech surround sound speakers and stereo speakers to the rear audio jacks, and it is no better. I also have 2 backup headsets and earbuds which I have tried in the front audio jack and the exact same thing. I have also tried with the hyperx which can be used as a non-USB headset as well. Still the same thing. I should also probably mention that when I plug a headset/headphones to the front of the pc, there is this loud static. This occurs even when the volume is at 20%, however lower then that and the static seems to go away. This helps me believe that it could be a pc issue.

My pc came with the Realtek audio driver I believe and I have not changed that. My hyperx cloud 2 uses its own driver titled HyperX Virtual Surround Sound, however, I should mention I do not use the virtual surround sound ever. The audio problem happens with both drivers.

Since it happens with both audio (and you should use the Virtual Surround to test and see what it does), that eliminates the audio hardware (e.g. Realtek).  Its down to a setup issue or application(s) issue.  May even require a complete Dell recovery factory reinstall.  I know its drastic and can be a hassle but don't rule this out as one option.  I don't think its hardware, based on what you've presented, so its back to a setup or a corruption in Windows which will require the reinstall.

One thing to do now is a complete disc (all partitions) image (backup) to a separate drive.  Then if (or when) needed you can completely recover.  Periodic disc images (all partitions) should be part of regular maintenance, not for IF its ever needed but for WHEN.   I recommend the free Macrium Reflect for disc imaging.  It is the most popular on computer forums I visit and what  I use (I use a paid version).

I assume when you first got it everything worked properly and at some point it developed the problems.  I would start with looking at what is in startup.  A lot of apps insert a startup but are not really needed in startup.  You can temporarily (or permanently) disable them and see if it changes anything.  Look for media players and game apps in the startup as suspect.  If you disable anything you will have to restart the PC for the change to take affect.

Another thought, if you have another disc is to connect it and do a clean install of Windows 10 on that and see if audio works OK with the clean install.  If it does then install one Windows 10 compatible game (don't install an older Win 7 or even earlier game) and try that.  If it's OK with the one game, install another.  If it's not OK with the installed game, uninstall it (restart the PC) and try another game.

I realize all of this is a hassle and time consuming but what I would be doing to troubleshoot.

Thank you for all the suggestions, however before I do them, which I will if the answer is no, I need to ask one more thing. I am looking to upgrade to the rtx 3070, which needs a better power supply, so I decided I am just gonna get pretty much a new pc. However, I am gonna keep all the parts aside from the GPU and motherboard from my dell. What I am wondering is will moving all these parts to a new pc do what you just said, or will I still have to do all that. Also just thanks for all the help you've given to me, I am pretty knew to PCs and just 15 and yet I've been able to understand everything you said due to the detail you wrote it in, so thanks for that.

You can move the CPU and memory to anther board, as long as they are compatible. You can reuse the hard drive (or SSD - whichever you have) but technically you will need a new copy of Windows as the OEM (Dell) version is only legally for the PC it was delivered with.  The CPU and memory have nothing to do with the sound problem.

If you can get the $$ I would go with everything new, and current technology motherboard, CPU and memory.  Intel motherboards are now Z490 and if the old CPU and memory will work you won't get top performance.  Along with those components you will need new power supply, video card and case.

Sorry for not being clear, I already did the research on how to do it and all that. I do not have the money so I am trying to keep all the same parts, as I have already confirmed with another post is possible. My question is before I do what u suggested to fix the audio problems, should I wait until after this move as I am wondering if that will be essentially the same thing you suggested and will maybe fix my audio problems. Sorry for the confusion.

If part of the move is a reinstall of Windows then just wait and see what happens.

I'm convinced its not a hardware problem as I stated before.  Its either a Windows or some added app that has caused the problem.
