Adding ram 3000 series
My grandson's laptop has 8 gigs of ram I want to keep one 4 gig and add one 8 gig Can this be done?

The 3000 was indeed a series but there were specific models such as the Inspiron 15 3565, From what I can see the models with varying amounts of RAM with 8 GB configurations were the 15-xxxx models. The Inspiron 15 3555 configuration was 2,4,6,8 GB. The Inspiron 15 3576 was 4,8,and 12 GB and so on. So there were a number of different specs. I wonder if you could be just a bit more specific on the model such as something along the lines I mentioned...Thanks.

Are you sure this is an Inspiron 5100? If so the 5100 was never certified for that amount of RAM. Can you please post the correct model number of the system? Thanks.
Depending on the model it may be possible to have 12 GB but without a correct model number I have no idea.

I will add 4gigs or 8gigs the video i watched had two slots for ram.
