Black dots on screen...

Inspiron 3521 Hi all, I bought this laptop a few years ago as a back up "computer" and we hardly used it. I was stored in a cupboard and when I took it out to take along on holidays and opened it up - the screen had these black dots on it. I was shocked and took it back to the shop where we bought it. The technical guys said that I must have damaged it by using force or by closing it with something on the keyboard. I did none of those things - but they were the experts and told me to just get a new laptop as replacing the screen would cost a fortune. So I did nothing. Every now and then I take it out and start it and then the dots move around... sometimes they are bigger with lines joining them... other times they are perfectly round and they are on different spots. What is the cause of this? What is your advice? I feel really cheated to have bought a laptop and then have it just "break" without reason? Is there anything you can do to fix it? Or would it be your recommendation to also just buy another laptop?

This could be an issue with the LCD panel. To isolate the issue follow below mentioned steps.

  • Check if the dark pixel appears in BIOS screen (Restart the computer and tap F2 on Dell logo).
  • Also restart the computer and check the display in Safe mode (Restart the computer and press F8 on Dell logo and select Safe mode). I had the same issue on my Dell alienware while using my citrix xendesktop . But the above steps helped that i was a driver issue.

Adrian

I have had this problem for a long time. All the spots are identical, about 1/2 inch across and they move around, and the keyboard will not work except for up/down cursor. I keep restarting my computer. It does not do this if I am working in Office, just typing. If I open a browser (chrome, firefox, edge, explorer) the big dots appear, dancing like all over the touch screen. I have not damaged or spilled anything on this. I do not have anything on the keyboard when I close it. What on earth is this? Of course it is past the warranty. I've never had a laptop do this before.

These dots mostly appear if our room fan "air" flow directly touches the screen. I have to turn the laptop so that the back of the lid faces our fan. The dots also appear if I exhale or blow air to the screen. Isn't this such a strange issue? But it's been going on for many months, even before the warranty expired. But Dell wouldn't help me other than to say I could ship it and fix it all at my expense. So this is my first and last Dell product.

Run a screen diagnostic:  hold D through powerup.  If the same fault shows, the screen needs to be replaced.  Total cost with labor will be between $100-150.

And if you're expecting any other manufacturer to cover a repair on an out of warranty system, you'll be similarly disappointed with your next system.  They won't.
