C: Drive maxed on install, how do I merge with D: Drive

Dell G5 15 5590

Dell G5 15 5590

Hello!

When I first bought this laptop it sat In my garage for 3-4 years.

When I finally got around to unboxing it and needing it, I sit it up, and did multiple driver updates as I was far far behind on updates and firmware.

After all of theses updates and installing some work programs my C: Drive maxed, my C: Drive is 100G

I have a Drive that is built-in this Drive is 1TB.

How would I merge the Drive into the C: Drive so my C: Drive could be 1.1TB or so how use my Drive.

As at the moment I get error's when installing some programs onto my Drive because &appdata& cannot be found as expected.

Is there a way to merge or allow my C: Drive to install onto my Drive.

Welcome to the Dell Community  @Braiden121

After a fresh install and update the first thing to do is make the drive your "Default" storage drive.

Depending on how much space you will need for the future???

You may want to think about increasing the size of your C: drive.

Best regards,

Hi @Braiden121 welcome to this free user-to-user Alienware laptop discussion forum.

The 100GB OS (C:) boot drive or partition has 4.62GB of free space and is unable to unpack and use temporary files. You are right to want to clone (copy) the existing OS (C:) onto a higher capacity ultrafast M.2 2280 PCIe Gen3x4 NVMe SSD, but not the slow 2.5‑inch SATA HDD. See Support for Dell G5 15 5590 Storage configurations.

Does this system have a 4-cell Battery configuration? Hard-Disk Drive (HDD) is supported only on the computers shipped with 4-cell Battery configuration. Removing the Base cover

Please open Disk Management to look for location of the OS (C:) and Data (D:) partitions. How to Open Disk Management (lifewire.com). Please share your Disk Management image in your next message. Thank you.

Would this help with apps like steam?
I do a ton of development and was trying to installing NVIDA Development for a project.

And it failed to use the Drive and said I needed more space on my C: Drive.

Hi @Braiden121 thank you for sharing additional information.

It seems that your system storage configuration has one 2.5-inch hard-disk drive and one M.2 2280 solid-state drive (1TB SATA HDD + 128GB NVMe SSD) with the SSD as your OS (C:) boot drive. There is no second internal M.2 2280 NVMe SSD slot within this system.

Dell G5 15 5590 with Base cover removedDell G5 15 5590 with Base cover removed

The Crucial System Advisor database says the internal 2.5-inch SATA SSD and M.2 NVMe SSD capacity can both be up to 4TB. Dell Dell G5 5590 | Memory RAM & SSD Upgrades | Crucial.com. The OS (C:) boot drive should always be in the fast or ultrafast M.2 2280 NVMe SSD.

During power-on, enter BIOS to determine if the 128GB NVMe SSD has BIOS boot list option UEFI option enabled, and thereby the modern GPT (GUID Partition Table) management format.

To clone the 128GB NVMe SSD, some of its files must be moved to the 1TB SATA HDD so that the clone application can be installed, use Macrium Software | Reflect Free Edition or similar. There are cloning videos on YouTube. You will need to purchase: -

(1) M.2 2280 NVMe SSD card such as, ultrafast 2TB Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus, or a higher storage capacity M.2 2280 card with high MB/s Read.

(2) External USB enclosure for M.2 2280 NVMe card, because there is no second internal M.2 SSD NVMe slot on this system.

No you cannot merge 2 diff physical drives--only adjacent partitions on the same drive. Your mistake is installing programs on the C drive which is small  and probably a ssd drive that is just for Windows operating system files. Everything should be installed on Drive D. Change the default installation drive to D drive.
