Dell G15 5515 Bricked after latest BIOS upgrade MAY/2023

My Dell G15 5515 Ryzen Edition got bricked after lates BIOS update, all went OK but after the last reboot the system wont do any post, I contacted support saying that as me, many others over the internet are saying the same problem, this is very recent, the update went online on may 8 of 2023 and they didn't say anythin else than "send us your laptop for 39,99$" 

 

This is the BIOS <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>. now I have a 1000$ paper holder

 

I'm creating this post so it can be indexed and maybe someone else can see it and provide with a solution

I had the same thing happen to me after a BIOS update this morning. Nothing would show up on the screen, and I kept trying to bring it back with a hard reboot. This didn't work, and I was looking at opening it up to remove and reconnect the battery cable as @mikebeckpy suggested.

Turns out I didnt have to do that, and I was able to recover the BIOS using this guide --

If you are experiencing no boot/no post after installing the BIOS version v1.11.1, please follow the process below to recover the BIOS for resolution:

  1. Unplug the AC adapter and make sure to power down your system.

  2. Turn on the laptop and then press the CTRL + ESC keys together and release simultaneously.

  3. Plug the AC adapter into the wall socket and into the laptop.

  4. The laptop attempts to do a BIOS recovery.

  5. Select Reset BIOS settings to Default from the recovery page list.

  6. The laptop should reboot and on reboot, it should boot into Windows without any error messaging.

That should fix the problem.

I've fixed it doing the next thing, remove the power cable, remove the back cover, remove the battery cable, leaving the battery unplugged you can cover again the back cover for safety. Now, you have to keep pressed the ESC + CTRL + FN key and connect the power cable, without leaving those 3 keys pressed, right after you connect the power cable press the power button and after pressing it keep pressing the F2 and F12 several time (not constantly pressed) the screen will make the display test, at this point release all buttons, will show the primary colors and then will turn off, after all that the laptop will reboot and will work again.

 

I know that those keys I've pressed are a combination of these three guides, but doing them separetly didin't work so in my desperation I tried them all

Really???? I have the same problem and have been fighting with tech support for almost a week now!!! They say it's my LCD Cable... It's very late here so I will sleep and will dream about getting my creen working again! 

I do have a post also on this forum and as far as I have seen a lot of people with G15 have the same problem! No matter if it's an AMD or Intel... I did also the tests you linked but nothing... I ever thought about doing them together... Will do I try! Will let you guys know!

I am not pretty sure if the F2 and the F12 should be keep pressed together or like if you were hitting those 2 several time... Can you explain or send us something more detailed? Like a link with a video or something, I did not get anything back...

I tried what you send and did not work ... I started to look into this deeply and I think the tech support mate is correct by saying that the display its indeed fried... I can still hook a 2nd monitor and when the system boots up I have image on the second screen but can not see BIOS as for security reasons I know it is just shown on the main screen... the only time does shows something is when you get the ssd out and the system recognize there is no bootable device, it is shown on 2nd screen but none on the main screen... other thing is that if I press D + Power button I am able to see the RBG patterns of the screen test on the main screen but anything else.
I havent been able to test if it is indeed the screen as I have been now 6 days waiting for Tech support reply me on my problem... so I will continue trouble shooting on this matter and for sure, get back if I got the solution!

Were you able to try the video posted by mseth? It should work on the G Series.

That guide is only for some models of dell, usually the bussiness models, not for G series

Thanks, I was able to fix my laptop Dell G15 5515 Ryzen Édition following this video.

- Be sure that your battery is connected.

- disconnect the AC Power Adapter.

- Press and hold  cntrl + esc 

- connect the AC Power Adapter.

- Keep pressing (cntrl+esc) for some seconds (5-10), after some seconds the BIOS recovery tool would appear on display.

I also have had this issue now, twice. Windows Update is forcing the BIOS update. This is a broken BIOS for at least the G15 5515.

Here are the steps that worked for me.

  1. From a working computer, format a USB drive. Make sure it is FAT32, default allocation size.

  2. Put the 1.09 firmware file directly on the root of the drive. The 1.11 firmware will brick your laptop.

  3. Using the rear USB port of the bricked laptop, insert the USB drive.

  4. Power off the laptop and unplug it from the AC adapter. Make sure no keys are illuminated (use the Caps Lock key as your visual indicator).

  5. Hold Ctrl+Esc.

  6. Reconnect the AC adapter cable.

  7. Tap power button.

  8. Let go of Ctrl+Esc the moment the caps lock key turns on.

Wait a few seconds and _hopefully_ the BIOS recovery menu will display. If so, you're in luck! Select the first option to enter BIOS recovery, and it will then downgrade from 1.11 to 1.09.

Rinse and repeat after the next forced BIOS update.

Love your Dell and the great job they did at testing.

The same thing happenned to me multiple times on two XPS laptops. The service center is little help to useless. Even though the laptop is bricked, there is a procedure in Dell's troubleshooting pages, that describes the procedure to recover the old BIOS and get your computer up and running again. Article Number: 000132453. You may need to retrieve your bitlocker key from Microsoft, to complete the procedure. You may not need it, but it just depends on the recovery needed. Hope this helps.

This same issue happened to me last night, updated to the latest firmware 1.11.0 and I got a black screen every time I tried to boot.  I was able to revert back to the previous BIOS version using the method described below.  I'm currently on BIOS v1.9.0 and I no longer have this issue.

- Be sure that your battery is connected.

- disconnect the AC Power Adapter.

- Press and hold  cntrl + esc 

- connect the AC Power Adapter.

- Keep pressing (cntrl+esc) for some seconds (5-10)

- Upon release cntrl+ esc the BIOS recovery tool will appear on display and allow you to revert back to a previous BIOS version

For what its worth, none of the ctl-esc options are working for me (2021  G15 5515 Ryzen).  Will be trying the USB recovery option next.

This helped me a lot thanks, the USB method is good if you cannot use the "classic" restore console.

Laptop was bricked again after Windows update reinstalled it again, I could not use the built-in restore console.

This time I blocked Windows updates for one month (again). If someone knows how to block this specific firmware update feel free to reply and big thanks by advance! It's a laptop I often use while I work.
