Dell G7 - CPU stuck at 0.8 GHz on Battery

Hello there!

Ever since I got my Dell G7, I've been having a blast with it when plugged into an outlet. But as soon as I disconnect the charging cable and attempt to do anything on battery, the laptop becomes completely unusable. Of course, I didn't expect the battery to be able to power the GTX 1060 inside, and I'm not planning to play demanding games while on battery. My problem lies in the fact that the laptop is completely unusable! My girlfriend's Intel i3-4000M runs faster than my i7-8750H because unlike hers, as soon as I go on battery, my CPU speed is limited to 800 MHz, according to Task Manager. Opening a web browser may be possible with 5 minutes of patience, but watching videos or doing anything more complex than reading a word document is pretty much impossible. As I've said, the machine is 100% unusable while in this vegetative mode.

I've tried switching things around the BIOS, I tried creating alternative power plans, and setting the minimum CPU power usage to 50%, 75% and even 100% in the existing "Dell" and "Balanced" power plans as well, but to no avail. I'm out of options, as there seems to be no real answer online.

Is this something that can be worked around? I thought that going on battery would mean playing on the integrated Intel Graphics 630 instead of the GTX 1060, not that it would make my computer slower than a 5-year-old budget laptop.

Thank you in advance for the help.
A worrying costumer

Good day.

I am having the same problem in my Dell G5 5587.

Everything upated to the full, even Bios.

Has dell found any solution? My laptop is still under warranty, but now I live in Europe, not sure how to proceed!!

I am a retailer of laptops and especially gaming laptops. I noticed that most gaming and workstation laptops do not run at full capacity when using the battery. Only when they try to charge do they achieve the strongest performance they expect.

In English:
Hello everyone, I just said exatcly this for the support team, I don't know how much it cost you in the countries where you bought, but here in Brazil this notebook costs almost 9 months of work for those who earn a minimum wage, and only thing what they say is it was designed like this, and as the problem was not detected in the first 7 days after the purchase can do nothing, here in Brazil the right to regret a purchase is only 7 days, but it is not regret that we're talking, it is about had been fooled. (Sorry for any mistake, english isn't my first language).

Hey guys. I figured out what is causing this problem.

I decided to do a clean install of Windows (I was using it as it came from the store) and somethings changed.

Now the CPU clock (Plugged in) only increases to 3.9 GHz when I run some task. Before the clean install it was always stuck at 3.9 GHz, even at idle.

Besides it, I found out that what stuck the CPU Clock at 0.8 GHz was the Graphic Card

If you disable your NVIDIA GeForce in the Device Manager (Display adapters) and restart your laptop (sleep works also) your CPU clock should increase normally when you run some task. It won't be stuck at 0.8 GHz anymore. Obviously you can't play games using your integrated GPU, but it works great for normal tasks. Then you can enable it again when you want to play.

I know this is not the ideal solution, but at least I can use my laptop on battery now. And now I know what is causing the problem.

To do it quicker I created a .bat file to enable and disable my external GPU and put my laptop to sleep.

It'd be great if Dell could add an option to do it automatically when you remove the AC adapter. I've heard that some guys fixed it in Regedit, but I couldn't find how to do it.

I hope it helps you guys who are trying to fix it for months just like I was.

IN RESPONSE TO REPLY ABOVE ^^^^^^^^^^

I can confirm that this is INDEED a solution (or at least a workaround) to this problem. Disabling your GPU, and putting your computer to sleep fixes my low CPU speed problems.

Thank GOD. I've had my 7577 for a year and a half and I've had to endure this problem for so long without any sort of help from Dell. They figured it was a "battery problem" and they wanted to charge me to fix my problem. Unbelievable.

I never really play games on battery life anyway, so this is a permanent solution for me. Thank you so much!

Guibw, thanks for posting this. I have been stuck with my G5 for over a year now and as I’m a field software developer often on building sites, I often feel like throwing my G5 off the roof of a tall building when on battery. Could you share your batch file?

Made an account as I believe to have finally found a solution. This issue has plagued me and many others since getting the laptop, and I've tried every solution I found. Very disappointed in Dell for not providing a proper solution by now and won't be buying from them again in the future.

Firstly, the above trick works, that if you disable the Graphics Driver then put your computer into sleep mode, you'll be able to clock past 0.8ghz when on battery. This is obviously annoying though so I kept digging.

The solution that finally worked for me: If you go to Control Panel > Power Options > Additional Power Settings > Change Plan Settings > Change Advanced Power Settings > Processor Power Management > (Here is the key) MINIMUM Processor State > Change it from 5% on Battery to 100%.

I (like many others), thought changing the MAXIMUM should fix the issue. I have no idea if this will drain your battery super quick, but it works and I am able to get up to 2.0ghz on battery without having to disable any drivers.

Like I said, very disappointed that this isn't a more important issue to Dell, as it seems very common. Hope this solution helps other frustrated people.

You're right.

I think it was fixed somehow in the latest updates.

Now I don't even need to disable my GPU. Of course it doesn't achieve the same performance as plugged in, but it's a laptop gamer, so it makes sense. For normal use it's fine for me now. I can watch 4k 60fps on battery now, and I couldn't do it before it was "fixed".

I left the Minimum processor state at 5%, I think it's better to save battery. I realized the performance doesn't change too much from 5% to 100%.

@gatsoman you should try it now. If it wasn't fixed for you, let me know so I can share the batch file with you.

Thank you very much! Using ThrottleStop and uncheck BD PROCHOT solved the problem on my Dell laptop.

I work in an office with over 350+ Dell laptops between 1-6 years old. I see this happen when using plugged into an AC adapter thats on its way out. The CPU gets stuck at 0.78Ghz to 0.80Ghz and swapping the AC adapter corrects the issue.

I suspect that your battery isnt putting out the correct wattage and replacing it would correct the issue. Disabling the GPU will take load off the battery im sure, allowing it to run past 0.8Ghz

Cheers,

Hey @guibw , unfortunately, the minimum processor state thing did not work for me. Is there any way you could share the .bat file with me?

Were you able to solve the problem or find a solution? I have the same case on my Dell G5 5587 purchased in the USA. I managed to get around this issue by disabling the Geforce graphics card, the reason for my purchase was precisely because of the graphics power! But only in this way can I use disconnected from the outlet, otherwise impossible to use the notebook, only in the outlet.

I've put some instructions inside the READ ME file. Please read it.
