Dell Inspiron 5583 and 5584 System BIOS issue

I got a notification from Dell Updates to update the BIOS as it had important fixes.

The update went fine and was successful.

After restart, the system hangs after 10 minutes.

Any help would be appreciated for the same.

Here is the link to the update that went: https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-in/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=ymjtf&oscode=wt64a&productcode=inspiron-15-5584-laptop

Thanks,

Hi shah.dhruvin:

What is the exact model of your Inspiron laptop (e.g., 15 5583 or 15 5584), what hard drive is installed, and what is your current antivirus?  Note that I uninstalled and then wiped the McAfee LiveSafe one-year trial off my computer with the McAfee Consumer Product Removal (MCPR) tool and now use Windows Defender for my real-time AV protection.

My Inspiron 15 5584 came with a 256 GB Toshiba KBG40ZNS256G NVMe SSD drive, but the urgent firmware update for this hard drive (Toshiba Solid-state Drive Firmware Update for KBG40ZNS128G/KBG40ZNS256G/KBG40ZNS512G/KBG40ZNS1T02 <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>, v1041.0104, update RV9HD, released 21-Oct-2019) is never detected by Dell Update or Dell SupportAssist, and it also disappears from the list of recommended updates if I filter the search results on the Inspiron 15 5584 support page <here> that match my specific Service Tag. I asked DELL-Cares several times what firmware version was recommended for my Toshiba SSD but they never responded.

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that there's some incompatibility on my machine between my SSD (or some other hardware component), BIOS v1.11.1, and some Dell utility like the Dell Power Manager Service v3.7.0 that's causing the intermittent system freezes and Sleep Mode problems on my machine that still persist after my reset to factory condition. Basir Bilal reported in their thread Dell 15 G7 7588 - Freeze, Errors, Hangs  that "There no solution for this type of error and case, this error occurs due to Faulty Motherboard. get your machines replaced by DELL at your earliest." After several months of troubleshooting DELL-Cares finally suggested that I send my computer back for repairs (perhaps to swap out my Dell 07R8NW A00 motherboard or completely replace my laptop ?), but having to manage without a computer for 6 to 8 weeks wasn't a viable option for me.

Here's hoping your solution is much simpler (and less disruptive) than a complete motherboard replacement.  If your system doesn't freeze when you boot up in Safe Mode that certainly sounds like a third-party software problem - perhaps a buggy Dell Power Manager or Dell SmartByte utilitiy that doesn't work correctly with BIOS v1.11.1 or even a scheduled background system check run by Dell SupportAssist. This hasn't helped me track down the root cause of my problems, but if you run the schtasks command schtasks >"%userprofile%\Desktop\UpcomingTasks.txt" from an elevated command prompt it will create a .txt file on your desktop with dates and times of upcoming tasks scheduled in the Windows Task Scheduler that you might be able to match with the next time of your system freezes.

Hello All

I had a boot-up issue with my wifes' Inspiron 15 5584, which I bought in 2019.

Last Sunday, she said it just froze on start-up, at the Dell logo, when she tried to turn it on.

I could get Windows to start in Safe Mode, so I tried to instal the Dell Recovery & Support Assist software, which failed. I also tried to run a BIOS flash, which also failed. I did manage to save all of her documents and shortcuts for edge and Chrome though.

I tried all of the fixes where you go into the recovery environment, which didn't work. Things like altering the boot sequence in the F2 BIOS menu, setting secure boot off, then back on, setting to factory & BIOS defaults, etc.

I also tried the F12 menu, where I performed the hardware tests, which all came back as passed. I tried booting from a various USB drives, a recovery drive, Windows Media Creation Tool & a Dell Image drive I created on my own laptop, all of these were unsuccessful.

I couldn't reinstal Windows either, because the installation would hang or freeze at 3% every time. I did try to instal after erasing and formatting both hard drives but, the installation would always fail.

I could always get the last backup image reinstalled after every failed attempt to reinstal Windows &, then I could always get into Windows in Safe Mode.

After going round in circles for best part of two days, I was getting to the point where I was going to give up. After reading this thread, I was thinking it could possibly be Mother Board related, even though I couldn't understand why it didn't show any hardware faults or errors &, it would start Windows in safe mode.

Right from the beginning, I had a hunch that this issue was caused by an interrupted/corrupted BIOS flash update. Rolling back the firmware in Safe Mode didn't work, so my last attempt was to search "Dell 15 5584 roll back bios". This took me to a Dell Knowledge Based Article - "Downgrading the System BIOS on a Dell System" - Article Number: 000130652, which then led me to "How to Recover the BIOS on a Dell Computer or Tablet" - Article Number: 000132453.

I performed a BIOS re-flash using the method described in the video tutorial, which finally cured the problem.

To open the BIOS Recovery Tool screen on the 15 5584, I switched off the laptop, unplugged the power lead, then held down the Control & Escape keys & plugged the power lead bock in. I kept holding down the keys until the BIOS Recovery Tool screen appeared.

There are three options, I tried the first two which showed as unsuccessful in replacing the corrupt BIOS flash. I then tried the final option, 'Reset BIOS Settings to Default' &, the system then booted up to the Sign In screen.

So, it was a simple fix in the end! Wish I'd checked for this solution before trying all of the other stuff!

Hopefully, this might be of help to some of you.

Regards

Hi R Thorpe:

Thanks for that information. I wish Dell Customer Support had suggested I try using the BIOS Recovery Tool and resetting my BIOS when my Inspiron 5584 kept freezing or refusing to wake from sleep and eventually wouldn't boot up (see my 29-Oct-2020 post <above>).  If I had read your suggestion earlier I would have tried a BIOS reset first - if that had worked for me it would have been a much simpler solution than the complete system reset back to factory condition Dell recommended back in August 2020.

For others who might be interested in learning more about this, here are links to the support articles Roy mentioned in his post:
