Any 2.5" SATA drive that's 9.5 mm or slimmer will work.

This would be a good time to give serious consideration to a solid state drive. While more expensive than a hard drive, it will substantially improve the performance of the system.

The only thing that error shows is that it couldn't test the optical drive -- likely because in order to do so, you must have a blank, writeable CD or DVD in the drive to run the test.  It would not be the cause of a no-boot.

What system model?

What OS is installed?

At what point in the power up does it fail to proceed?

If the hard drive is showing 0G, it likely has failed.
